Since a culture is melted in a language of a country, having an interest
in a culture of a country means having an interest in its language and a
desire to learn the language. Thus, because learning a language in a
country denotes learning its culture and spirit, when it comes to teaching
Korean to foreigners, it is also essential to teach the Korean culture
systematically.
With the comprehension of Korean culture as a basis, the students will
gain a better understanding of Korean Language and will be able to use
the language more naturally. The purpose of this study is to develope
teaching Korean Culture on the base of sociocultural Theory, especially
Vygotsky's approach.
In this study, I made an attempt to find out the definition and category
of the Korean culture from the previous studies, and a way to connect
Vygotsky's sociocultural theory to the education of Korean culture. In the
Vygotsky's theory, activities like cooperative conversation process or
discussion are very important because learning consists of interactions
between individuals.
This study chose Korean culture contents for korean language learners
by looking through the previous researches on the 2nd language
acquisition and setting the Korean culture category. Plus, I analyzed the
Korean text using in korean education center and University
Furthermore, after analyzing the cultural categories found in the
literature review and cultural topics dealt in the current textbooks, I
divided teaching topics into beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels
according to the levels of learners. I also suggested the Korean culture
teaching methods according to the levels of learners based on the
sociocultural theory in the Second Language Acquisition Theories.
