This research aims at coming up with the methods to educate Korean culture effectively by using the Korean fairy tale, <Kongjwi and Patjwi>. To accomplish this goal, it was investigated through preceding researches that fairy tales are appropriate and effective for Korean culture education.
In Chapter 2, the current state of the fairy tales included in Korean language and culture-oriented textbooks and that of their use were examined. As the result, it was found out that the culture education based on traditional fairy tales was limited to the introduction in the textbooks, which were only being used as the tool to enhance language skills, and rarely for culture education. Accordingly, it was concluded that the culture education methods making use of fairy tales with rich cultural resources were necessary.
In Chapter 3, <Kongjwi and Patjwi>, one type of world-famous <Cinderella>, was chosen as a material for culture education. For effective methods of culture education, the cultural elements of <Kongjwi and Patjwi> were extracted and analyzed in cultural category, and the cultural elements of <Kongjwi and Patjwi> type of fairy tales were compared to those of the 4 countries of Vietnam, China, Germany and Portugal.
In Chapter 4, specific methods for Korean culture education with the fairy tale of <Kongjwi and Patjwi> were suggested by using three Korean culture teaching methods – storytelling, element comparison and contrast, reaction-centered model - based on Chapter 3.
This research is meaningful in that it meets the demand of the present age when culture has emerged as the key word by proposing the culture education-centered teaching and learning methods using fairy tales. Yet, more study on Korean culture education methods to supplement this study and case study of classes in the field are needed. Follow-up site case study on Korean culture education, which was not covered in this research, is expected henceforth.
