This study investigated Korean monophthong pronunciation produced by 30 Spanish speaking learners of Korean from Central and South America through listening test and experimental phonetic analysis. In listening tests, 4 Korean language teachers listened the monophthong files and evaluated them on 6 likert scales. In experimental phonetic analysis, the monophthong files were analyzed through praat and compared with monophthong pronunciation produced by Korean native speakers. As for results, the study found out that /ㅏ/, /ㅣ/, /ㅐ/, /ㅔ/, /ㅡ/, /ㅗ/, /ㅜ/, /ㅓ/ were evaluated as similarly sounded as native speakers’ pronunciation, in order. the listeners evaluated that /ㅏ/ was the most similar vowel. In case of /ㅓ/, /ㅗ/, /ㅜ/, those vowels were most different from those of native speakers and sounded similar each other. In experimental phonetic analysis, /ㅏ/, /ㅓ /, /ㅗ/, /ㅜ/, /ㅐ/, /ㅔ/ showed significant difference by women and /ㅓ/, /ㅐ/, /ㅔ/ showed significant difference by men from those of native speakers’ pronunciation. /ㅏ/ showed the diffrence in F2 with that of native speakers. /ㅓ/ showed the difference in F1 both women and men with that of native speakers. /ㅗ/ showed significant difference in F1 and F2; however, /ㅜ/ only showed significant difference in F2. /ㅐ/and /ㅔ/ were differentiated in the pronunciation of Spanish speaking learners of Korean in this study although they were pronounced without differentiation by Korean native speakers.
In conclusion, this study found that most learners tried to pronounce each vowel correctly but they had errors in some vowels. the result of this study suggest the teachers teach the articulating method to leaners by studying the pronunciation of Spanish speaking learners of Korean.
