The Present State and Social work of the Azerbaijani students in Korea: Focusing on the adaption and future prospect
The diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Korea was established in 1992. Exchange of visits at the level of heads of states between two countries in 2006 and 2007 created new opportunities to pave the way for the legal base of cooperation, strengthening the economical and cultural relations. At the same time, the bilateral cooperation in the field of education has developed in recent years. More than 60 students from Azerbaijan study at various Korean universities. By the support of Korean and Azerbaijan government scholarship programs the number of students is increasing day by day. In 2008, the number of Azerbaijani students was increased about sextuple, and in 2009, they were about 75 students. “BUTA” Azerbaijan-Korea Student Organization was founded in Seoul in 2009 in order to organize Azerbaijani students studying in Korea and to strengthen their community and social activities.
This qualitative study investigates the choice of overseas educational destination, life adaption, organizations and career choices of Azerbaijani students studying in Korea. This study conducted questionnaire and in-depth interview methodologies. In-depth interviews with 6 participants and questionnaire with 55 participants were conducted from September to October 2014.
Results are as follows: Firstly, Azerbaijani students selected education in Korea, mostly because of high quality education and teaching staff. Food culture was the main difficulty for Azerbaijani students studying in Korea according to the results of the analysis. Furthermore, high commodity prices, food and maintaining friendship with Koreans were other difficulties. Spicy food, pork and seafood are the main reasons for the difficult adaptation to the food culture. Due to the religion of the majority Azerbaijani students, which is Islam, students do not consume pork. Moreover, spicy food is not famous in Azerbaijani cuisine. So, food is considered to be the major problem for Azerbaijani students residing in South Korea.
The results of the analysis of the interview, which is related to the career choice after the graduation showed the following. Most of the participants responded that they try to find a job for a short period of time in Korea or Azerbaijan after graduation. Study in Korea is a great assistance to them for finding a job because they learn Korean language and culture, which is very important for their career in Korean companies. Additionally, they assume that education in Korea is a great opportunity to find a better job, and they recommend the education in Korea to their friends.
In addition, following measures are suggested in order to attract more Azerbaijani students to study in Korea.
First of all, the number of scholarships by the Azerbaijani and Korean governments should be increased. Due to the fact that Azerbaijan government scholarship program ends in 2015, further student support scholarship programs must be established by the Azerbaijani government. Secondly, Korean education and its advantages should be widely introduced in Azerbaijan. Moreover, most of the students would like to study in a country that provides a bright future and prospective work. So, Azerbaijani students should have more opportunities to find a job after graduation from Korean universities, and Korean companies’ investment projects in Azerbaijan may be a successful tool for that.
