The purpose of this study is to classify Korean passive as grammatical morpheme and semantic function, and then to analyze acquisition of Korean passive by Japanese learners comparing with Japanese. The reason for focusing on passive is that it is easy to approach conceptually, nevertheless it is a one of the difficult grammatical category for L2 learners because it has various realization in Korean.
Especially, this study is focused on Japanese learners because Korean is quite similar to Japanese in view of linguistic typologically and there is morphological congruency in realization of passive. However, Korean and Japanese are not same on specific realization and semantically Japanese category is extensive than Korean. Therefore, Japanese learners have difficulties to acquire Korean passive.
Chapter Ⅰ explains the purpose of this study and reviews previous researches on acquisition of Korean passive.
Chapter Ⅱ examines theoretical background. At first, it states differences between Korean and Japanese in grammatical morpheme and semantical function. Furthermore, Korean passive is classified by lexical, morphological, syntactic forms according to Pienemann’s Processability Theory that is a hierarchy from lexical over phrasal to inter-phrasal morphemes. In semantically it investigates a possibility of L1 Transfer in view of Prator’s hierarchy of difficulty.
Chapter Ⅲ describes research methods for observing acquisition aspect of Korean passive based on grammatical morpheme and semantic function. The test has been performed on three groups. One is consists of 20 native Korean speakers, another is 20 Japanese learners of Korean who are intermediate and the other is 20 Japanese learners of Korean who are advanced. The test was composed of 40 questions that are ‘sentence completion’ task.
Chapter Ⅳ analyze the result data of the test and verify research problems. First, there is a statistically significant difference between three groups to the results that compared to the mean score for Korean passive sentence production to the grammatical morpheme. Furthermore, investigate acquisition level of Japanese learners of Korean based on the accuracy percentages. This research adopt a criterion 75% of Ellis. The advanced learners of Korean show high accuracy to the syntactic form(95.0%), morphological form(91.9%), and lexical form(87.5%). However, the intermediate learners of Korean show low accuracy to the morphological form(45.6%), syntactic form(36.3%), and lexical form(31.9%). Therefore, the advanced learners reach acquisition to the Korean passive’s grammatical morpheme, though the intermediate learners do not. However, it can’t explain that Japanese learners of Korean follow an order according to the hierarch of grammatical morpheme.
Second, there is a statistically significant difference between three groups to the results that compared to the mean score for Korean passive sentence production to the semantic function. The result reveals that Japanese learners cognize Korean Passive’s semantic function influenced by their L1(Japanese) according to the Prator’s hierarchy of difficulty at stage 2. As a result of analysis, the advanced learners of Korean record accuracy 85.9% and reach the acquisition of Korean passive syntactically, however in case of the intermediate learners show 53.1% accuracy and also can’t reach the acquisition level.
This study has significance in many aspects. First of all, it focused on acquisition of Korean passive. Secondly, it reveals Korean passive’s whole grammatical morpheme by classifying from lexical form over morphological form to syntactic form based on Processability Theory as well as tries to investigate its acquisition order. Furthermore, it examines semantical L1 transfer on Korean passive acquisition. If the results of this study are applied to Korean language education practices, it is more effective to teach Korean passive.
