The culture education has been a topic dealt in Korean Education since 1990s. The early studies mainly focused on the needs in culture education, and then there has been various studies on culture education in Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language. However, the studies on culture evaluation after culture education are still in need.
This study starts with the hypothesis that it is possible to evaluate culture competence in Test of Proficiency in Korean(TOPIK). To begin with, this study categorizes culture into culture products, culture practices and culture perspectives and then reviews the importance of the evaluation in cultural competence. In addition, to set the foundation to extract the items related to culture in TOPIK, this study reviews the properties, contents and data of the evaluation in cultural competence with its check points.
Based on this, the items related to culture in each section of TOPIK are extracted and categorized. Comparing the TOPIK revised to its previous version, the rates of the items related to culture were higher in all sections, and the rates went up twice especially in the writing section. The result that the rates of the items and texts related to culture rose in the revised version of TOPIK reflects the direction that it is impossible to evaluate real communicative competence without considering various sociocultural context and knowledge and language use.
This study investigates a method to evaluate cultural competence proposing texts to test cultural competence in the writing section as an example. The method proposed in this study is to evaluate sociocultural manners in the category of writing, which is divided into three groups of politeness, background knowledge related to culture, and culture-related expressions.
This study is meaningful to try the probability of the evaluation in cultural competence in TOPIK extracting culture-related items from both previous TOPIK and revised TOPIK after comparing each other, and to propose a method to evaluate culture competence with free composition in the writing section.
Based on this study, further and more studies on the evaluation in cultural competence are expected in the near future.
