Our country has gradually turned into a multicultural society due to an increase in international marriage and the number of foreign workers and foreign students who study in our country. Korea has continued to exchange with China since 1992, and the amount of trade have steadily been on the rise. Specifically, many Chinese people have visited our country thanks to the Korean wave. As the satisfaction of foreign students studying in our country with campus life and their adjustment are under the influence of what experience and feelings they have, this shouldn't be overlooked. The purpose of this study was to examine the satisfaction level of foreign students studying in our country with their campus life and influential factors for their satisfaction level.
Four research questions were posed:
1. Are there any differences in satisfaction with college life according to demographic variables?
2. Are there any difference in satisfaction with college life according to the selected independent variables(education, administration, facilities, social activities and interpersonal relationship)?
3. What factors of the independent variables affect the satisfaction level?
The subjects in this study were 174 Chinese undergraduate and graduate students who were studying in Gyeonggi University. After a survey was conducted to measure their satisfaction level with college life, the collected data were analyzed by a statistical package SPSS 18.0. A frequency analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, hierarchical regression analysis and Pearson correlation analysis were utilized.
The findings of the study were as follows:
First, as for satisfaction level with college life by demographic variables, there were no significant differences according to gender, degree courses, the length of stay, educational experience of the Korean language and Korean proficiency. On the contrary, significant differences were found in that regard according to the period of being helped to receive Korean language education, the motivation of studying in our country and what made them to decide to study in our country.
Second, concerning satisfaction with college life by the independent variables(education, administration, facilities, social activities and interpersonal relationship), there were significant differences according to the independent variables.
Third, regarding the correlation among demographic variables, experience of receiving Korean language education in China, the areas of college life and satisfaction with campus life, the period of receiving Korean language education had a positive correlation with satisfaction level with college life(r=.206).
There was a negative correlation between the motivation of studying in our country and satisfaction level with college life(r=-.201, p<.01), and the satisfaction level was negatively correlated with what made them to decide to study in our country(r=-.184, p<.05). There was a positive correlation between the areas of education and the satisfaction level (r=.643, p<.01), and that also was positively correlated with the area of administration(r=.660, p<.01), the area of facilities(r=.645, p<.010, the area of social activities(4=.645, p<.01) and the area of interpersonal relationship(r=.696, p<.01).
Fourth, the area of facilities(B=.235, p<.05) exercised a positive influence on the satisfaction level. Better facilities led to higher satisfaction with college life. Also, the area of interpersonal relationship (B=.270, p<.05) had a positive impact on the satisfaction level. Better interpersonal relationship led to higher satisfaction with college life.
The findings of the study illustrated that the Chinese students who were studying in our country were more satisfied with their college lives when they were able to receive more Korean language education in China, when they were advised to study abroad and when they decided to study in our country due to the Korean wave. Oh Sun-jin(2014) found that in terms of satisfaction with studying in our country by the length of stay, the foreign students who stayed for a less than a year were most satisfied. In this study, however, the Chinese students who resided for three years or more expressed the best satisfaction with their college lives. Cho Hyeok-soo and Jin Kyung-tae(2009) found that interpersonal relationship was the largest factor to affect satisfaction with college life, followed by language and the motivation of studying abroad. In this study, however, interpersonal relationship was most influential, followed by facilities. Sang Kyung-wui(2013) found that more social support and more leisure activities led to better satisfaction with college students among foreign students. But in this study, better interpersonal relationship was followed by higher satisfaction with college life. Jjuhu(2012) found that system and policy were the greatest factor to impact on satisfaction with college life, but the area of interpersonal relationship was identified in this study as the most influential factor. Finally, satisfaction level with college life became higher when the areas of education, administration, facilities, social activities and interpersonal relationship were better.
