This research started from questioning regarding teaching reading in Korean, which usually consisted of simple vocabulary learning, grammar expression learning, and sentence translation. The necessity of ‘the summarizing activity for effective reading’ has been recognized. Thus, the purpose of the study is to seek the teaching methods of Korean reading focusing on summarization for the intermediate or advanced learners of Korean.
Summarizing is a skill at the highest level in the basic reading strategy. It denotes the capability of expressing the contents briefly and smoothly as a learner reads text and processes its important information in mind. Furthermore, for the critical reading, a learner should be able to summarize the significant contents in the reading passage and for writing, a learner should be able to summarize what he or she has read.
Therefore, this research is to study the teaching methods for summarization and to suggest an actual teaching model through utilization strategies of the markers of text-structure, rules for summarizing texts, and graphic organizer.
I referred to the categories found in English education or Korean education to use the theoretical contents of the markers of text-structure, rules for summarizing texts, and graphic organizer, and added my opinion to them.
Compared to the English education or the Korean education, it is a reality that the studies on summarization in the Korean education as a second language have not been done much. Furthermore, most studies done about summarization have suggested only one strategy. In this study, however, there is a meaningful implication in that I collected all the possible strategies for summarization and suggested teaching methods and teaching models for the foreign learners of the Korean language.
