Language is the carrier of culture and the color words are an important group which appears in almost all of the languages. We are living in the world full of color terms, which not only have referential realizations but also convey figurative meanings on the basis of everyday experiences. There are two schools of ideas about the study of metaphor: the traditional opinion and the cognitive opinion. The traditional opinion argues that metaphor is a kind of language characteristics which is opposite to patterns of thought and which is opposite to patterns of thought and which is symbolized in literature especially in poetry. But Lakoff & Johnson (1980) deals with metaphor from the perspective of cognitive linguistics which is a new shift from the traditional idea. From the perspective of cognitive linguistics, color words just like space domain, time domain and emotional domain are the important part that belongs to human cognitive ability. The study on the metaphor of space domain, time domain and emotional domain has been discussed a lot in linguistic literature. However only a few studies focus on the metaphor usage of the color words. Therefore, this analyses the metaphorical usage of color words in Korean and Chinese based on the cognitive idea of Lakoff and Johnson (1980).The similarities and differences between metaphorical meaning of color words in Korean and Chinese are also compared in this . Ontological metaphor expresses abstract things which are invisible, untouchable and unintelligible with concrete and specific things. That is, ontological metaphor is also well reflected in words which denote the color 'red'. The metaphorical meaning of red color words derived from the source domain is realized by entities of our body, artificiality, natural objects and abstract concepts. There are some similar phenomena between Korean red words and Chinese red words. This thesis studies the types of entities in source domain of red words in Korean and Chinese. The includes five chapters.
Chapter one is the introduction part of this thesis explores the significance, objectives and previous literature of red terms in Korean and Chinese. Research objectives and methods are also introduced in this part.
Chapter two explains the definition, concepts, types of metaphor and especially the metaphorical use of color words.
Chapter three studies the characteristics of metaphorical usage of red words in Korean and Chinese based on the types of entities in source domain: our body, artificiality, natural objects and abstract concepts.
Chapter four is the comparative study of metaphorical phenomena and metaphorical meanings of red words in Korean and Chinese. We find that there are some differences and similarities between red words in Korean and Chinese. The underlying reasons of these differences and similarities are invested in this chapter as well.
The last chapter is the concluding part which summarizes what has been discussed in the previous chapters.
We can understand the features of the language and diversity of culture through studying of 'red' words in Korean and Chinese. Doing this can play an active part in learning languages and contributes to settling cultural conflicts, thus we can promote the cultural exchanges between Korea and China.
