This study aimed to describe the similarities and differences in term of address of Korean language with Indonesian language. Cooperative relation between the two countries has increased numbers of Indonesian students who are interested in studying Korean language. However, term of address is directly related to the culture and daily life of the local community which is still less of data and research concerning this topic that causes many shortcomings for students.
How to call the other person is not the same to everyone, speakers must adapt to the characteristics of the addressees, e.g., age, rank, position, closeness, situation that must be considered. Korean language has a language system which is not owned by the Indonesian, namely the language system of honorifics and not honorifics. The system language is one of difficulty for Indonesian students to understand the Korean language due to differences in the level of the language used.
Term of address is a word used to call other person before starting a conversation, type of address language referenced in this study is divided into four, name by noun, request word, pronoun place, and interjection. Noun is divided in to three terms of address, namely name of address, family address and rank/social status. While term of address Indonesian language refers to name address, family address(kinship), social status and interjection. The selection of these terms of addresses is based on the daily life of both countries.
After classifying type of term of address Korean language and Indonesian language based on typical of both languages, next is using term of address based on situation of interlocutor. The selection of term of address of Korean language is selected based on the relationship know or do not know, the relationship of upper and lower. The selection of term of address in Korean language which is used, is divided in two big classifications, namely ‘name of address’, and ‘social group’, such as ‘term of address family, school area, and office area’. Meanwhile the selection of term of address in Indonesia, language is divided in to three situations, namely based on age, formal situation, and special social status. Selection of using term of address of those three situations is divided into term of address of kinship, address of name, address of religion social status.
The conclusion obtained through this research is the term of address of Korean language is more complicated than Indonesian language. Term of address in Korean language is used differently according to the nature of the interlocutor, while Indonesian language is simpler and research showed, kinship word and terms of address of name is more dominant used in daily term of address.
