A Comparative Study on Buddhist culture Idiom in Korean-Thai
In everyday life is very necessary and important tool of communication, language and culture which is closely related. Without understanding of language, we never understand the culture. So the learning language is not only studying the literal words but also studying their religion, culture, thinking, social science and history.
The purpose of the thesis is to compare similarities and differences between Korean and Thai idioms about Buddhist culture. Buddhism is passed down different ways to Korea and Thailand, so studying their Buddhist culture is help to understand their different values. Moreover, studying idiom is very essential to understand language and culture. These Buddhist idioms are showed that Korean and Thai people are related to Buddhist culture for long centuries so we can people’s thinking and feelings that they drummed their culture into Buddhist idioms.
This thesis is divided into 5 chapters.
In the first chapter, I will set up a concept and purpose of my thesis and explain how write the thesis.
In the second chapter, the different ways of definition idiom in English, Korean, and Thai are explained from dictionaries. After the definition of idiom, we will limit the idiom word.
In the third chapter, before compare the Korean-Thai idiom of Buddhist culture, we will take a look the Buddhist history of each country. In Korea, it will be divided into Samgook, Tongil Shilla, Korea, Josun and contemporary history. Thailand history will be divided into Sukhothai, Ayutthaya, Thonburi and Rattanakosin generation.
In the fourth chapter, we will categorize Buddhist culture into 4. It will be temple, monk, Vinaya Pitaka, and asceticism.
In the last chapter, we will summarize the thesis and be presented together with the tast that should be done in the future if there is any chance.
Because the idioms contain their own culture and history, we figured out the importance of studying idiom. Until now there were the comparisons between Japan and Korean or Chinese and Korean with similar Buddhist culture. But Thai Buddhist and Korea Buddhist are quite different Buddhist culture so it’s worth comparing their culture. I expect this thesis can be used as a helpful tool for studying or understanding both Thai and Korean language and culture as well.
