The study is designed to examine the internal structure of Korean mental lexicon of Sino native language learners and its access route. For this, this research has eight research questions which explains L1-L2 processing in various perspectives.
(A) Which of the routes of the mental lexicon access process is dependent between on phonological route and morphological route?
(B) Does Chinese Character morpheme knowledge effect on word judgement at semantic level? (C) Can we evaluate the degree of the cognitive burden of individual sound shifts constructing the phonological route toward mental lexicon?
(D) Is there a significant perception gap depending upon word frequency?
(E) Are the semantic structures of Sino Korean words and Chinese words shared in at semantic level?
(F) Is the priming effect of Chinese character morphemes deviated by whether the individual morphemes of which consisting the Korean and Chinese words are identical or not?
(G) Is the priming effect of Chinese character morphemes differentiated by writing system?
To answer the questions, three closely organized psycholinguistic experiments were conducted. The experiment ① was designed to investigate the access route to mental lexicon by applying “lexical decision task” to three independent groups(Native Korean speaker, Sino native language learners, Non-Sino Native learners). The native Korean speaker group was set as a default group to compare with the other groups, while the non-Sino native learner group is directly compared to the native Sino learners. The experiment ② “naming task” was implemented to measure the specific degree of the cognitive burden of individual sound shifts. The constitution of the population of experiment ② followed the same method to the previous experiment. The experiment ③ “cross linguistics naming task” encompasses the parallels and differences between Korean and Chinese in the light of Chinese morphemes and writing systems. The experiment shows whether the recognition of Korean vocabularies can be affected by the uniqueness of Korean writing system(Han-gul).
The result of the experiments suggests that there is a significant difference between Sino native language learners and their counterparts in both the access route and the internal structure of Korean lexicon.
