Questions help learners clarify and deepen understanding of the text they are reading. This research focuses on the questions in the materials.
The purpose of this study is to analyze questions incorporated in the intermediate level of Korean textbooks in hopes of addressing the effectiveness of the types of questions in association with the learner’s reading comprehension competency. We developed the seven types of question, and those are divided into the upper and lower levels according by difficulties.
Centered on the seven question types, the researchers analyzed 5 types of the intermediate-level Korean textbook totaling 12 books, and led to four major findings. First, the vast majority of questions embedded in the textbook have been identified as the type 1 question. Second, few books includes all types of question. There was only one textbook that includes all seven types of question while other books rather focus on a particular type of question. Third, intermediate-level Korean textbooks were not properly sequenced according by the level of difficulties. Fourth, despite of the textbook being intermediate level, they placed much emphasis on asking low-level questions.
Based on the results of analysis of the textbook, the researchers suggest one type of question in order to help the intermediate level readers enhance the reading competency.
This research study is meaningful in a sense that it takes a role of pioneer in the analysis of the question types without much prior research available. In the future, we hope further investigation into the type of questions and questioning strategies in Korean textbook which will in turn offer insights into the appropriate level of questions in the beginning, intermediate, and advanced textbook in a seamless manner. Furthermore, further research in analyzing various question types that review the question types in textbooks is expected.
