This research aimed at comparing the aspect of indirect communication performed in modern Korean and modern Chinese. Through this, this research intended to investigate the similarity and difference of the method of indirect expression in modern Korean and modern Chinese.
In this research, the researcher selected total 40 drama scripts, i.e. 20 from Korea and China respectively, as the analysis data. The frame of analysis was the type of sentence, propriety condition of speech-act, speech rate, type of situation. First, the researcher classified the speech of Korean and Chinese into four sentence types, i.e. interrogative sentence, declarative sentence, imperative sentence, requesting sentence. Next, determined speeches which perform indirect expression based on propriety condition or speech rate. Lastly, classified the speech in 'conflict situation' and 'general situation' according to speaker's emotional state in the conversation situation.
In Chapter 2, before full-scale analysis, the researcher investigated the concept and range of indirect expression. Also, investigated the type of sentence to be used as the frame of analysis, propriety condition, speech rate, and concept of situation type.
In Chapter 3, the researcher investigated realization aspect of indirect expression according to sentence type.
In Chapter 4, the researcher contrasted·compared the aspect of indirect expression in Korean and Chinese according to three conditions, i.e. sentence type which performs indirect expression, situation where indirect expression is performed, primary expression of indirect expression. The research results through this contrastive analysis are as follows.
First, the frequency of indirect expression by Korean is relatively much higher than by Chinese in modern daily life.
Second, in Korean, type of indirect expressions enabling each type of sentence, e.g. interrogative sentence, declarative sentence, imperative sentence, requesting sentence, is various and there's no big restriction. There's no big restriction in Chinese, either, regarding indirection expression type for each type of sentence to perform, however, to see the indirection expression in imperative sentence and requesting sentence type, it is not so various as Korean. In conclusion, the relationship between type of sentence and type of indirect expression is more flexible in Korean than in Chinese.
Third, as the major performance cause of indirect expression, there are 'burden relief' and 'emphasis', and the aspect of 'emphasis' appeared to stand out both in Korean and China.
