The purpose of this dissertation is to define the notion of grammatical subjects in Korean from a view point of Korean learners' mother tongue. Grammatical subjects are an essential part of Korean sentences. However, it is difficult to define the notion of grammatical subjects precisely. Therefore, this study focuses on not only Korean but also on Korean learners' mother tongue(English, Japanese, Chinese, Indonesian).
This dissertation has two goals: first, to define the notion of grammatical subject in Korean from a view point of Korean learners' first language; second, to propose methodologies for teaching grammatical subjects in Korean for foreign learners.
Chapter 2 defines the notion and the differences of grammatical subjects; subjective markers; double subjects; ellipsis of subject between Korean grammar; and Korean grammar education for leaners of Korean. Also, this chapter examines the factors to be included in Korean subject education for learners of Korean through the main Korean language education grammar book.
In chapter 3, the notion and traits of grammatical subjects, including the theory of subjects, topic, and case, in English, Japanese, Chinese, and Indonesian (the representative language of Korean learners') are discussed. Also, the traits and main component items of grammatical subjects are different in all languages. For this reason, many learners of Korean make various errors when they use grammatical subjects in Korean. This study focuses on the relationship between the type of language and the use of grammatical subjects in Korean. In addition, this dissertation studied the traits of grammatical subjects in and analyzed differences from Korean. This chapter also defines the features and characteristics of grammatical subjects in Korean learners' mother tongue and compares to the traits of the grammatical subject in Korean.
Chapter 4 examines how to describe the notion of subjective items in primary Korean text books. This chapter also observes the aspect of Korean learners' and subject errors in Korean sentences. The results suggest that there are particular patterns in using grammatical subjects in Korean language, depending on the Korean learners’ first language.
Chapter 5 suggests education models for teaching grammatical subjects based on learners' levels(basic, intermediate, advanced) through the results of chapter 3, 4 and various previous studies.
Traditionally, grammatical subjects have not been regarded as important grammar items. However, they are basic features of all languages. Therefore, learners of Korean cannot speak Korean proficiently if they do not understand the concept of grammatical subjects. In particular, this dissertation shows new methods for teaching grammatical subjects in Korean by focusing on the mother tongue of Korean learners, including: English, Japanese, Chinese, and Indonesian. At the same time, this study suggests a curriculum for teaching grammatical subjects in Korean and about subjective features, subjective markers, double subjects, and the ellipsis of subjects.
