교황 베네딕토 16세는 2009년 10월 11일 요셉 드 뷔스테(Joseph De Veuster)신부를 성인품에 올렸다. 요셉 드 뷔스테 신부는 흔히 한센병의 성자라고 알고 있는 다미안 신부의 본래 이름이다. 오랫동안 세상은 다미안 신부에 대해 칭송을 해 왔는데 실제 그가 성인품에 오른 것은 사후 120년 만의 일이다. 그의 영성에 대한 연구는 한국어 번역본 존 패로우 저서「문둥이 성자 다미안」과 오다베 다네아끼의「나환자의 사도 다미안 신부」두 권 뿐이다. 유럽 각 개국의 언어로 번역된 다미안 신부의 편지도 아쉽게도 한국에는 출판되지 않았다. 그만큼 다미안 신부에 대한 연구는 미흡하다고 할 수 있다.
많은 영성서적들이 영성사에 한 획을 그은 아씨시의 프란치스코, 시에나의 가타리나, 예수의 데레사 등의 성인들의 삶과 영성에 관하여 다루고 있고 이들이 주는 교훈은 대단하다. 그럼에도 굳이 다미안의 삶과 영성을 거론하는 것은 다미안이 일반인들이 하지 못한 일을 해낸 성인이기 때문이다. 다미안은 이웃을 위해 자기 목숨을 내놓는 독특한 방식으로 그리스도를 증거하였다. 사람들은 그가 한센병에 걸려 죽었다는 그 자체에만 관심을 두고 안타까움와 경외심을 느낀다. 그러나 다미안은 가톨릭 사제인 동시에 나약한 인간이었다. 그는 선교지의 모든 이들과 하나가 되기 위해 스스로 한센병에 걸린 것이다. 그는 고통받는 야훼의 종처럼 하와이 몰로카이 섬의 한센인들의 병고를 같이 앓아 주었으며 그들과 온전히 하나가 되었다. 본 논문에서는 다미안의 삶을 영웅화하기보다는 객관적인 사실을 토대로 연구하여 그의 삶과 영성을 살펴보고자 한다. 나아가 다미안 신부의 삶과 영성을 통해 오늘날 현대인들에게 작으나마 참된 그리스도교의 신앙적 비전을 제시하고자 한다.
