A Study on the Cognition of Genderlect in Korean by Advanced Chinese Learners of Korean
The objective of this research is to analyze speech associated with a specific gender, called genderlect, in the Korean language. The method used in this research was to examine terms deemed to be genderlect in precedent studies in the dialogues of a script of the Korean drama series, “Family’s Honor” and conduct a questionnaire among 21 advanced Chinese learners of Korean.
The content in the questionnaire was selected based on their genderlect content, which was deduced by analyzing their vocabulary and grammar terms. Chapter 2 of this , first, presents the vocabulary and grammar terms that appear most frequently in preceding research. Second, the genderlect collected in the precedent studies was analyzed through the language used by characters of both sexes in “Family’s Honor”, a Korean television series. This analysis shows that certain terms determined to be genderlect in precedent studies are no longer considered to be genderlect. In fact, the public seems to accept those terms as both masculine and feminine.
Chapter 3 seeks to understand the cognition of genderlect by the advanced Chinese learners of Korean. 21 advanced Chinese learners of Korean were surveyed. This questionnaire survey was made up of eight sets of dialogues from “Family’s Honor”. The dialogues were selected because they contained vocabulary and grammar terms that appear most frequently in precedent studies. According to the survey, for advanced Chinese Learners of Korean, the cognition of vocabulary terms is generally better than the grammar terms. The cause of this result may be due the different grammatical structure between Chinese and Korean.
The significance of this research is the exploration of the change in perception of genderlect over time. This is shown by analyzing terms deemed to be genderlect in precedent studies in today’s discourse, namely in the dialogues of “Family’s Honor”, a current Korean drama series. Furthermore, this examines the cognition of genderlect in the Korean language by today’s advanced Chinese learners of Korean.
