In the filed of bilingualism and second language acquisition, literature has shown extensive research on how first language(L1) influences on second language(L2). The L1-L2 relationship, however, cannot be unidirectional. The present study investigates the influence of English as an L2 on speech production of Korean as an L1 via a nonword repetition task(NRT: Dolloghan & Campbell, 1998). The stimuli used in this task observe Korean phonotactic constraints and are not associated with any real word in Korean. The performance of Korean NRT was compared among the three groups: 8 Korean-English bilingual(KEB) children, 8 KEB adults, and 18 Korean monolingual(KM) children. The results of the present study showed statistically significant differences on the performance of Korean NRT among the three groups. KEB children and KM children performed significantly different in percentage of phonemes correct(PPC), PPC for dysillabic stimuli(2PPC), 4PPC, the percentage of consonants correct(PCC), and the percentage of vowels correct(PVC). KEB children also showed statistically significant differences with KEB adults in PPC, 1PPC, 4PPC, PCC, and PVC. KEB adults, however, performed similarly with KM children for all measures. These results indicate that the acquisition of English as a second language may have a significant effect on speech production of Korean nonwords, measured by PPC in Korean NRT and that the age of SLA concerns with the performance of Korean NRT in the present study.
