The purpose of this study is to clarify an education plan of korean idiomatic expressions aiming at female marriage immigrants through cognitive semantic mechanism called image-schematic metaphor.
There is increasing number of marriage immigrants as regards increasing number of foreigners every year in south korea. However at the same time there is increasing number of divorced people. Among them, female marriage immigrants who have married korean male constitutes the larger share 85.9%. Although national support helps them to settle down, they have been suffered in daily life due to lacking in korean language ability.
Beyond a problem concerning communication, to the extent that female marriage immigrants are lacking in korean language ability, some problems will happen in couple and in their children and family members, as well as in our society.
For female marriage immigrants, korean language means as not only a tool for communication and as but also a medicator for receiving knowledge and information which is needed to live at the level equivalent to korean native speakers.
In particular they let their husband, parents-in-law, neighbour and children be their companions of conversation, therefore they have to understand and learn korean language and culture under the close relationship with korean people. Accordingly, it is essential to learn vocabulary which is required for daily life and to understand culture and daily-life habit. Given that they are placed in a difficult situation, it is critical to put korean idiomatic expressions under education process. Through studying but acquiring, we need to learn korean idiomatic expressions because of the 3rd meaning, the multiplied meanings of words.
Learning korean idiomatic expressions has the merit of learning language as well as learning culture. And it has the merit to the extent of enhancing ability of comprehension and expression by inspiring vitality to conversation. So this is essential to education.
Practically speaking, however, places where the idiomatic expressions education aiming at female marriage immigrants is provided as an independent subject are seldom found. There are frequent occasions when, in most of female marriage immigrants, they give up the education before going forward to high grade and after going through middle period at the middle grade. Therefore, it is desirable to teach basic idiomatic expressions from early period at the basic grade. When looking at textbooks for them, however, no textbook for idiomatic expressions of basic grade is found while textbooks of about 10 items of middle grade are found. When comparing the textbooks with another adopted by language education institutes of universities, the idiomatic expressions coming out of the former are sparse in examples.
Recently, the demand for korean idiomatic expressions education instigates to prepare an idiomatic expressions list and to suggest an effective education plan. The list proposed by researchers is still valid and has educational meaning, nevertheless, it is revealed that, as confirmed from analyzing the list, just 15% of overall idiomatic expressions is involved to be common and shared. What it means is that a question 'how are suppose to study the remainder excluded from the idiomatic expressions in these textbooks?' is raised. Particularly, female marriage immigrants can face with idiomatic vocabulary which they have ever learned in daily life. At that time, they are often requested by need of ability to infer and understand it.
The meaning of idiomatic expressions features it can have the 3rd meaning which is difficult to perceive the practical meaning through composing the each meaning of each word. That is to say, it is regarded to date that these idiomatic expressions are to be memorized by force of studying because they are followed by ‘non-composite property’. As noted above, they are regarded as one of difficult sectors where teachers and learners take on mountains of works to study despite the unproductivity of learning as compared with the amount of learning
Korean idiomatic expressions can be expanded and specialized to include the 3rd meaning through an diachronic evolutionary process, most of which are performed based on metaphor. The metaphor helps acquire new knowledge, improve learning memory, and enhance communication ability in language learning.
For this reason, metaphor has an influence on foreign language education and has an utility for learning idiomatic expressions. In particular image-schematic metaphor, which is engaged with natural and cultural and social condition, encourages us to take creativity and grasp which allows us to understand what we have never experienced before as when it is applied for idiomatic expressions education in language and culture.
In the process, the next three ideas are designed in this research. The first idea is to find a revised-alternative education plan beyond existing idiomatic expressions education by adopting cognitive semantics from researchers of Im Jiryong, Lee Jiyong, Sim Jiyeon and using mechanism called image-schematic metaphor in which babies could have an experience of image-schematic at the period of the fetal stage, and they could cognize concept of whether it is good or not depending on their physical experiences.
The second idea is to propose a teaching-learning plan after taking cognizance of concept of idiomatic expressions as well as of characteristic of korean idiomatic expressions education. In the consequence, this research seeks shared features or problems by analyzing the list which has been used or studied to date and by looking at the situation of existing korean idiomatic expressions education.
The third idea is for a teaching-learning plan. The proposed teaching-learning plan tries to draw cognitive strategies including 'perceiving the source area', 'corresponding to the target area', 'understanding the target area and expanding the expressions', and then establishes the education items. It is applied by the 3 stages for vocabulary education designed by Bernard D. Seal, and by the 5 stages of ‘instruction- suggestion- exercise- application- arrangement’ which is used in a general teaching-learning plan, by which lesson procedure can be suggested and a teaching-learning plan can be drawn.
Idiomatic expressions education unifies a language and a culture. Learning according to the revised-alternative education plan induces effectively vocabulary deduction ability, comprehension ability, communication ability, gaining self esteem and confidence, which can result in inspiration of accomplishing or motivation of learning. Furthermore it is very helpful to application in educating children, finding employment, acquiring nationality. It is a worthwhile integrated education supporting a stable family life and civic life as a member of korean society.
Until now, the education plans mentioned above are being active and achieved through the idiomatic expressions education in English but not being active and achieved through that in Korean. The fact that this research is a new effort providing an trial service is of significance. Because researches aiming at female marriage immigrants are nonexistent in this area.
