Recently, there is a globally increasing interest on the social culture of Korea, and the number of foreign students trying to learn Korean for various purposes is constantly increasing.
There may be various reasons for each individuals trying to learn Korean, but there are many cases where their desire for learning started with favorable impression towards the Korean culture from their learning of various Korean mass media. This is an evidence that the Korean pop culture is seen as quite attractive to foreign learners.
Learning a foreign language is not just about becoming proficient at the simple referential function of a language. A fluent communication is only possible with the understanding of the cultural background of the language that is the subject of studying.
Being simply good at speaking or listening cannot be called being excellent in linguistic ability, and for the improvement of linguistic ability, it shall also be done a cultural education on the language that is the subject of learning.
In this way, various education with a wide scope on Korean culture is necessary in the field of education in Korean language. Also, the right understanding in Korean culture by the learners will increase the functional aspect of the Korean language ability for them, and at the same time, provide assistance for a fast adaptation in Korean society, which will let them achieve their educational goal in a faster and more effective way.
However, in the field of education in Korean language at present, education on Korean culture is not really being actively carried out. In a modern society that is changing day by day, it is thought that learning Korean culture in the existing education method will be difficult to induce cause or interest of learning or to allow for understanding of Korean culture in depth for its learners.
For this reason, this study recommends plans for education of Korean culture using K-POP, which can relatively be easy to access for the Korean language learners amongst many Korean mass media. In this way, it is believed to help the learners to understand Korean culture in depth in an easier and more interesting way at the practical field of Korean education, therefore, serving the purpose of helping them to achieve fluent communication in Korean.
Firstly, in Chapter 2, the relationship between linguistic education and cultural education is studied. Accordingly, it is reviewed in advance how to set up objectives for cultural education in the field of Korean language education, and what to teach with the set objectives so that standards are set up based on these.
In Chapter 3, teaching materials on Korean language are analyzed to find out how it is performed the education on Korean culture using songs in Korean education at present. Also, a survey is carried out with subjects of students from the first through to the fourth grade university students majoring in Korean at a university in Thailand to find out the demands of actual students.
In Chapter 4, a literature review on various subjects related to K-Pop is carried out to find out about its features. Accordingly, standards are prepared for selecting what to recommend in terms of plans for education on Korean culture. And, it is also discussed the methods of teaching and learning when the plans are implemented on the educational fields, as well as the relevant educational values and some relevant issues that may be raised.
In Chapter 5, it is analyzed two K-Pop songs selected as per the recommended standards. Based on the analysis, practical teaching plans on education of Korean culture are recommendedin units.
In this study, it is recommended the plans for education on Korean culture using K-Pop, which is largely popular being in the center of the Korean wave. However, the educational plans have limitations as they are not implemented in the real field of Korean education, and it is difficult to prove how effective they would be for the learners in the real educational field. For a study that is more practical and effective, it shall be remedied for the issues by implementing these in actual classes and analyzing the results that follow.
In the education of foreign language, the needs for cultural education have already been proven by many researches and there are cultural educations being carried out in the field of Korean language education accordingly. However, the reality is that the objectives and the education courses are not clear with only a few variety of education methods. Accordingly, it is hoped that there will be continuous and new researches on educational plans foreducationinKoreanculture.
