The purpose of this study is to identify the similarity and difference between advanced Japanese Korean learners, Korean native speakers and native Japanese speakers in terms of the strategy types of response to each offer. For this, this study poses two questions.
First, it asks whether there is a difference or similarity among each group in terms of the strategy types of response speech act to a given situation. Second, if there is a difference, it asks how the different response strategy types used by each group in a given situation can be explained in terms of the social factors of social power, social distance and the content of offer.
In this study, the Discourse Completion Test(DCT) was used as an investigation method. The total number of the participants was 90 and they consist of advanced Japanese Korean learners(JKL), Korean native speakers(KNS) and native Japanese speakers(JNS). They were asked to fill out the DCT, which consists of the questions classified into eight offer situation according to three factors, that is social power, social distance and the content of offer.
The results reveal that three group use different strategy types in their responses to a given offer, and this can be explained by the differences in the degree of imposition which differed in terms of the social factors. Especially, this study showed that the degree of imposition ed by each group differed in the given situations, and this affects the difference in strategies realization phase of each groups. About direct strategies realization phase, KNS tend to be more direct than JNS in accept acts while JNS tend to be direct than KNS in refusal acts. Moreover, about indirect and adjuncts strategies realization phase, KNS tend to employ various strategies according to the situation, while JNS tend to employ similar strategies in all the situations. And JKL tend to select similar strategy with JNS in direct strategy and use similar strategy with KNS in indirect and adjuncts strategy.
This study have the different point with other studies about speech act, that focused on offer acts and responses to it, including not only refusal but also accept. The result of this study appear to offer valuable aware of the differences of the realization phases and strategy types of responded speech act to offer according to the cultual differences.
