The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of self-identity, family cohesion and social support on self-esteem and school life adjustment ability between multicultural family adolescents with a chinese mother and general family adolescents with a korean mother.
The sample of this study is 94 general family Adolescents with a korean mother and 76 multicultural family Adolescents with a chinese mother who have responded the inquiries for measuring self-esteem(Rosenber, 1979), school life adjustment ability(김아영, 2002), self-identity(박아청, 1996), family cohesion(Olson, 1986) and social support(Fulgini, 1997).
The sample data was analyzed by Cronbach's α, two-way analysis of variance, correlations analysis, and regression analysis.
The major findings of this study are as follows;
Mother's nationality is revealed to affect on self-esteem and the network of friends in the sub-area of school life adjustment ability. General family adolescents with a korean mother have higher self-esteem than multicultural family adolescents with a chinese mother. And the general family adolescents with a korean mother have the better network of friends than multicultural adolescents with a chinese mother.
Second, as a result of examining the effect of self-Identity(subjectivity, self-acceptance, future certainty, goal orientation, initiative, intimacy), family cohesion, and social support on self-esteem, self-acceptance and subjectivity have positive effects on the self-esteem of multicultural family adolescents with a chinese mother and self-acceptance, subjectivity, intimacy, and family cohesion have positive effects on the self-esteem of general family adolescents with a korean mother.
Third, as a result of examining the effect of self-Identity, family cohesion, and social support on school life adjustment ability, subjectivity and family cohesion has positive effects on the relationship between teachers and students of muticultural family adolescents and general family adolescents and make the adolescents of muticultural family and general family obey school rules.
From the viewpoint on the network of friends, the adolescents of multicultural family with high subjectivity and intimacy but low initiative and the adolescents of general family with high subjectivity, intimacy, self-acceptance but low initiative have good relations among friends.
subjectivity only makes multicultural family adolescents do the good performce in their class on the other hand subjectivity and family cohesion make general family adolescents carry out their role well in their class.
Therefore independence is very important for self-esteem and school life adjustment ability of multicultural family adolescents with a chinese mother, meanwhile independence and family cohesion are highly important for self-esteem and school life adjustment ability of general family adolescents with a korean mother.
