For the past 20 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korean and China, exchanges between the two countries have become increasingly more frequent. Of diverse exchanges, particularly in cultural fields, Chinese people have begun to know about Korea through Korean dramas, movies, books, and songs. As such, there is a growing need for translation from Korean into Chinese and translation from Chinese into Korean, and researches with regard to this have been continuously conducted.
Translation is not simple. Many people think that translation is possible for anyone who is equipped with foreign language ability. Superior speaking ability does not always guarantee accurate translation. Even if one is well acquainted with the culture and historical background knowledge of the country in which the original to be translated was authored, poor translation skills can lead to mistakes. It is a very important matter in translation what translation techniques are used.
In this thesis, the original of March off the Map written by Han Bi-ya, which was chosen as the research subject text, and its Chinese-language translation version were analyzed and the techniques of translation were systematized by classification, and errors made in the translation process were also detected and analyzed.
This thesis is divided into a total of 5 chapters. Introduction in Chapter 1 described the time period and the purpose, the research scope and methodology of this thesis. In Chapter 2, the concept and the types of technical methods of translation were analyzed and effective translation types were explored. In Chapter 3, the translation techniques represented in the translated text were divided into literal translation, liberal translation, additive translation, and subtractive translation, and finally mistranslations were analyzed. Literal translation was explained by dividing it into literal translation of a word and literal translation of a sentence, and liberal translation was explained by dividing it into liberal translation of a word and liberal translation of a sentence, and liberal translation of a sentence was explained by subdividing it into three – translation of a phrase into a word, translation of a phrase into a phrase, and translation of a sentence into a sentence. In Chapter 4, the contents of this thesis were briefly summarized, and what should be considered important and what should be noted in translating literature were revealed through the translation techniques explored in Chapter 3, and the ways to raise the degree of completion of translations were presented.
While collecting various cases of the original and the translations, it was found that many parts of the translations were translated using four character idioms. In many cases, Korean four character idioms were translated into the most similar Chinese four character idioms. And since the percentage of the use of four character idioms in the Chinese language is far higher than in the Korean language, there were many cases in which the original did not use four character idioms but translations used them. Since four character idioms represent the characteristics of the Chinese language well, and make sentences rich and natural, and have permeated the language life of Chinese people, they play the role of raising the readability of translations.
The techniques of translation derived through the analysis on the techniques of translation of March off the Map into Chinese are described briefly as follows.
Translation should be done so that the contents which the original intends to convey and its expression techniques can be well represented and translator should be well acquainted with the background of the author of the original and the time period in which the work was written. While trying to translate the contents of the original completely in the translation process, the translator should be familiar with the language habits of the country of arrival language. And unless literal translation causes too much problems in conveying the contents and expression techniques of the original, literal translation should be done so that the expression techniques of the original can be represented as much as possible. And if literal translation cannot convey the contents of the original fully or does not agree with the language habits of the country of arrival language, then liberal translation should be done. Finally, a additive translation method, in which a simple but appropriate, short phrase or sentence that can connect two sentences in translation so that readers can easily understand, is used and a subtractive translation method, in which redundant parts are unhesitatingly deleted in translation so that sentences can be neat and natural while main contents of the original are well conveyed, is used.
Although researches on translation techniques to raise the quality of translation have been conducted continuously, the aforesaid efforts should continue to be made to keep up with the speed of newly coined words and unceasingly changing language habits. This researcher hopes that this thesis will contribute to academic circles making such efforts.
