A Study on Conversational Structures of Dialogues in Korean Language Textbooks

The purposes of this research are to analyze characteristics of conversational structure of dialogues in Korean language textbooks with a concept of adjacency pairs from an angle of conversational analysis and contribute to seeking of the direction to organize dialogues of Korean language textbooks which is helpful for the improvement of Korean learners' communication skills and discourse organization ability by reflecting characteristics of conversational structure well when making dialogues of textbooks in the future.
For the research, dialogues of 17 kinds of textbooks which were completely published at elementary level․intermediate level․advanced level as the function combined textbooks published to improve advanced-level communication skills were selected as the subject of analysis.
The standard of analysis was set by referring realization frequency in the study on forms of adjacency pairs suggested in main precedent researches as examples and forms of adjacency pairs analyzed by observing actual dialogues. Forms of adjacency pairs were categorized by connective pairs of speech act by the forward looking function and the backward looking function and 14 sub-items whose super items are ‘summons·representative ·directive·commissive·expressive·declaration and following utterance’ were set as the standard of analysis.
This thesis synthesized results of the analysis on total 1956 adjacency pairs by examining 446 dialogues taking total 2922 times of turn-taking. The results are as follows.
First of all, [question-answer] form showed the highest frequency among the whole forms of adjacency pairs. Particularly, this form is biased at elementary level because simple structure of question and answer in consideration of the level of learners was preferred for publishment. Therefore, at elementary level, various forms including [question-answer] form must be utilized and dialogues of active interaction must be organized. In addition, [call-answer] and [greeting-greeting] which are mainly shown in start and end of the dialogues showed low frequency because dialogues of Korean language textbooks showed few dialogues with structural completion of 'start-development-end'. Therefore, the rate of dialogues with complete structure must be increased so as to provide information for start and end of dialogues.
Second, in aspect of variety of adjacent pairs forms organizing one dialogue, C textbook organized relatively various forms of adjacency pairs and more complicated structure of dialogues than other two institutions. However, adjacency pairs were biased to 1 ~ 3 forms, so they must be improved to show the aspect of various and complicated interaction which can be shown in Korean speakers.
Third, dialogues of Korean textbooks showed completely high rate of preferred structure, so it must increase dialogues of dispreferred structure so as to learn proper rules and strategies of dialogues in the situation of refusal or objection. Also, it was necessary to organize strategies of communication in dialogues of non-preference structure realistically.
Dialogues of textbooks are organized by rules which can expect participants' mutual utterance, so adjacency pairs are significant for the analysis as information of basic rules of the conversational structure can be provided. Also, exercise of conversation in actual education field is done by mutual words of interaction, so the results of analysis are expected to contribute to educational application greatly.
