'Korean-Stream' has pervaded since the 1999s in China. Initially, content-oriented Korean culture such as Korean Drama, Korean Performance, and K-pop Music became popular among Chinese people. However, Chinese people's attention has now shifted to Korean foods, fashion, games and so on. Moreover, the Korean Stream has intrigued Chinese people as well as people around the world to visit Korea for sightseeing or for shopping.
This study aims to investigate how the 'Korean-stream' has been spread in China. More specifically, this study tries to investigate how the National Image of Korea, Chinese people's perceptions of Korean culture, and K-pop have contributed to the spread of the Korean Stream.
This study consists of literature review about the Korean-Stream, the National Image of Korea, Chinese people's perceptions of Korean culture, and K-pop in particular. The survey questionnaires in this study are based on the literature review above. The sample of our respondents was 272 Chinese people between the ages of 20 and 50. We used SPSS 18.0 for statistical analysis and it includes Individual Item’s mean, frequency test, T-test, and ANOVA.
The research findings are as follows. First of all, Chinese people generally have a positive view of the National Image of Korea, Korean culture, and K-pop. Secondly, Chinese people between the ages of 20 and 30 as well as those with office jobs have a more positive view of the National Image of Korea. Third, Chinese women have a more positive view of Korean foods, fashion, drama, movie, and K-pop than Chinese men. Fourth, 83.5% of the respondents were familiar with K-pop. Lastly, K-pop was preferred among Chines college students and office workers.
