This study set out to analyze idiomatic expressions in newss and provide educational plans to help foreign learners understand and use idiomatic expressions in the Korean language with news materials.
Idiomatic expressions refer to the expressions customarily used in a language and reflect the culture, history, and environment of the language. Foreign learners can engage in more fluent language activities by understanding and using idiomatic expressions. In Korean education, the study of idiomatic expressions is regarded as one of the important items for the smooth communication of foreign learners. There have been a variety of studies on the selection of lists or lesson designs needed for teaching and learning idiomatic expressions. The previous studies on idiomatic expressions for foreign learners, however, mostly focused on speaking. The reality is that a good number of idiomatic expressions appear in news or materials, which are representative of written language. Since the teaching materials in college usually provide idiomatic expressions for conversation, those who study idiomatic expressions only with such teaching materials will have some difficulty with reading and understanding idiomatic expressions in newss.
This study thus aimed to propose some teaching plans for idiomatic expressions to help foreign learners read and understand newss. The investigator checked idiomatic expressions in newss by analyzing their articles, examined the frequency of idiomatic expressions making a frequent appearance in newss, selected an educational list based on the frequency, and proposed some educational plans to study idiomatic expressions with newss based on the educational list.
The study finds its significance in that it helps high-level Korean learners examine the meanings of idiomatic expressions in newss and accurately understand them, thus engaging in smooth news reading.
