This study started from the concern about how cross-cultural family in Sri Lanka adapt themselves in a multicultural context. This phenomenological study was aimed to discover the meanings from their daily life. Additionally, it was also aimed to search about how they experience their cultural adaption and recognize their self-identities.
To accomplish the purpose of this study, three research questions are made.
1. How do Korean-Sri Lankan cross-cultural families experience acculturation and cultural adaptation?
2. How do Korean-Sri Lankan cross-cultural families' children experience socialization?
3. What are the meanings of Korean-Sri Lankan cross-cultural families' cultural adaptation?
For this study, four cross-cultural families who reside in Sri Lanka are selected. To gather research resources, I have done individual in-depth interviews 18 times for each families' members, group interviews twice and participant observation for their children 27 times were accomplished from April to October, 2012.
The phenomena related with cultural adaptation of cross-cultural families in Sri Lanka are distinctly dissimilar in each family but it reveals the meaning of cultural adaptation and socialization from these four cross-cultural families.
The results and interpretations about the cultural adaptation of the cross-cultural families are explained below.
Firstly, the aspects of cultural adaptation are very diverse in the perspective of acculturation. Whether they try to keep their own cultural identity or accept a new culture of mainstream society which they belong to, there are many cultural conflicts between these cross-cultural families. However, they made efforts in order to solve their discordance between their own identities and the newly accepted culture. Accordingly, the style of problem solving to adjust themselves and the way to keep balance of plural culture in a family are various.
Secondly, the children's socialization of these Korean-Sri Lankan cross-cultural families tend to be influenced strongly by their parents' cultural choice and preference. They try to identify themselves with a 'Perfect Korean' even. Therefore, their personal identities have a tendency of depending on how their families characterize their culture between Korea and Sri Lanka and how their interaction are effected in their families. Cultural identities are formulated from the context of social and cultural environment around the individual.
Thirdly, it was possible to discover several meanings of the cultural adaptation of four cross-cultural families. First of all, these families tend not to assimilate to Sri Lankan cultures even though they live in Sri Lanka and one of their parents is Sri Lankan. Literally, the culture of the people reflects the everyday lives of mainstream society but these families tend to choose the Korean culture rather than Sri Lankan culture. In addition, the reason why they recognized is that the strength of a nation, which is the economic wealth and the abundance of their culture. Second of all, the cross-cultural families' children have many difficulties to acquire with different languages. These children should achieve to learn at least three languages, which are Korean, Sri Lankan and English as a official language and it caused them some communication problems. Moreover, it is not easy to decide a mother tongue in their particular situation. The ways of communication are quite complicated between the family member so it is difficult to deliver their accurate meanings and understanding each other due to using different languages. Third of all, for cross-cultural families, residing in Sri Lanka is the optimal choice for their children to avoid the prejudice and discrimination which they would confront if they live in Korea. They think that they would get stressed if they live in Korea as a cross-cultural family and also their children would get in negative troubles in their school life. Therefore, they made a decision to reside in Sri Lanka so that their children can be protected by unnecessary discrimination and racial prejudice.
