The study is a qualitative research to investigate the attitude of mothers in multicultural families towards the bilingual usage of their children.
The research question is as follow:
1. What attitude do mothers in multicultural families have towards the bilingual usage of their children?
The participants of the research consist of four foreign mothers (three from Vietnam and one from Cambodia) who live in Pohang and have children aged from three to five. Since the participants are intermediate learners of Korean, there was nothing wrong with the interview. Data was collected by seven times interviews (pre-interview once, individual interview four times and group interview twice) from 28 December, 2012 to 1 March, 2013. For systematic analysis, this study followed the analysis procedure from transcription, to categorization, to conceptualization.
The results of this research are as follows:
First, mothers in multicultural families have positive attitude towards usage of both Korean and foreign language at the same time of their children. However, the foreign language that is favorable to the participants is not mother’s native language, but English. The mothers thought that their children as Korean have to learn Korean, and English as the second language is more important than mother’s native language in that English is not only universal language but has linguistic importance in Korean society.
Second, the participants have negative attitudes towards the usage of mother’s native language of both them and their children. The main reason for why mothers does not use their native language is that there is few people who can speak in mother’s native language, even their mother-in-law cannot understand the language.
Mothers worried about the underachievement possibilities of native language (Korean) learning of their children due to learning both mother’s language and Korean at the same time. In addition, mothers recognized that their children does not want to learn mother’s native language.
However, although the participants externally showed negative attitude towards the usage of mother’s native language, their internal wish that their children can fluently speak in mother’s native language some day in the future was obtained by the interview.
