This research aims to find an effective Korean language intonation education plan and propose this method. The study examines the Korean intonation patterns of Korean speakers and the Korean intonation patterns of English speakers on the basis of an experimental phonetical method. The purpose of this research is to analyze the Korean utterance of English speaking students of the Korean language, regarding their dialogic intonation of Korean, and to indicate the errors and the causes behind them. The dialogic intonation of Korean exposes a speaker’s intonation dynamically during conversation. Research on dialogic intonation is very necessary, because the object of studying intonation is smooth communication during such dialogue.
Like the beginner students of Korean language, intermediate and advanced students are also confused in actual communication, because there is little or no instruction regarding the rules of dialogic intonation. This confusion is caused, in part, by the interference of one’s native language. As a result, before error types can be distinguished, basic education contents should be formulated. To do this, research is necessary to find out appropriate and effective intonation teaching methods for English speaking learners of the Korean language. To conduct this research, twenty-two American and Canadian English speaking beginner level students of Korean were sampled. This research can have the following meaning in consideration of the discussion above.
Chapter 1 brings up the necessity of intonation education by suggesting the reasons for and purposes of intonation education for supra-segmental phonemes. Since intonation is mostly affected by one’s mother language, intonation education based on language area is effective.
Chapter 2 illustrates the definition of intonation and its function, defines the concept of pragmatic function, and proposes systems and types of intonation, especially in how they correspond to Korean and English intonation.
In Chapter 3, the study analyzes intonation types of Korean speakers compared to that of English speaking learners of Korean. Prior to this examination, the study held preparatory exams and looked into the validity of examination tools and the appropriateness of examination sentences. Problems were addressed after the preparatory exam and the actual exam proceeded with the intonation analysis. Results were verified by explaining the Praat program, which was used as an exam tool and examination standard.
During Chapter 4, teaching intonation methods are suggested. This chapter concludes by summarizing how one’s native language and the lack of Korean intonation education influences the acquisition of new, Korean intonation patterns. To do this, the presents “Intonation Block” and “Intonation Chart” which are education tool for recognizing and practicing Korean intonation.
The result of this study is helpful in ascertaining how English speaking students of Korean can listen to the target language more attentively and speak more coherently, through the student’s correct understanding of the Korean sound system in a meaningful context using “Intonation Block” and “Intonation Chart.” Analysis and the presentation of causes of intonation errors on the part of English speaking students of Korean are definitely expected to successfully improve their grasp of the Korean language.
