This study was aimed to assess the reliability and validity of the Korean-translated version of the PedsQL 3.0 Diabetes Module as an questionnaire of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Also, it was conducted to investigate HRQOL and its related factors in the patients and their parents.
The participants were 102 children (aged 8-18 years) with T1DM and their parents from the department of pediatrics in 5 teaching and university hospitals in Daegu, Korea. Data were collected by a questionnaire survey of children and their parents including HRQOL, self-care, self-efficacy and social support index, and a review of medical records of children.
The internal consistency of the Korean version of the PedsQL 3.0 Diabetes Module reached or exceeded Cronbach's alpha values of 0.7 for both child self- and parent-proxy . Test and retest of both s were highly correlated (r=0.82, 0.87). Children's HRQOL for child self- was significantly correlated with hemoglobin A1c (p<0.01). In the case of hospitalization in recent a year and in the case of parents with lower education, children's HRQOL was lower. Multi-regression analysis demonstrated that self-care and friend's support were significant variables of children's HRQOL under adjustment of children's clinical characteristics and parents' socioeconomic characteristics. Parents with children diagnosed as diabetic complication ed lower score of HRQOL. Their HRQOL was influenced significantly by coping efficacy, social support and children's HRQOL for parent-proxy .
In summary, this study revealed that the Korean version of the PedsQL 3.0 Diabetes Module was feasible, reliable and valid for measuring the disease-specific HRQOL in patients aged 8-18 with type 1 diabetes. Also, the results suggested that better self-management for diabetes would improve children's HRQOL, and positive aspects in children's HRQOL and better psychological status would improve parents' HRQOL.
