This study s on a study of explaining Grice's Conversational implicature and suggesting how to proceed with analyzing the meanings of implicature in conversation. this research is also to investigate how the flouting of Grace's Maxims can be applied in Korean language and to take a linguistic approach on literatures through the conversation analysis in a novel of the way of Gwang Ju written by In Suk, Joo at the same time.
A study on the meaning of implicature has been actively discussed. Pragmatists have focused on the theory of Conversational implication after it was shown that there were many problems with the notion of truth and falsehood. However, there are few studies on conversation implication in real world situations and works of literature compared with the theory of implicature. Therefore, the researcher will find out the application and practicality of Conversation implicature in a novel of the way of Gwang Ju. The utterances have to be examined in contexts of situation in order to analyze implicated meaning in an utterance. The factors of the context of situation are comprised of speakers, listeners, time, places and topics and they have influence on the meaning and understanding of utterances. There are two kinds of presuppositions. One is a semantic presupposition depending on what it is uttered and the other is a pragmatic presupposition, associated with a sentence is a condition that a speaker would normally expect to hold in the common ground between discourse participants when that sentence is uttered. Inference is referred to the process of analyzing the meaning of implicature using the contexts of situation and pragmatic presupposition.
Grice's Coorperation principles and Maxims specifies what participants have to do in order to converse effectively and logically. On the other hand, we violate those principles in real life situation. Flouting of Grice's maxims makes listeners interpret specific contexts and infer the implicated meaning in utterances. The results of this study are as follows. First, there were many examples of the violation of conversational maxims many phenomena of conversational implicature in a novel of the way of Gwang Ju. Second, the real application of Conversational implicature will help to understand the stories and ideas of any literature. Finally, it will be revealed that the language in real life situations has various meanings according to conversational situation, background and the intention of speakers.

이 연구의 목적은 Grice의 대화함축이론에 대하여 알아보고 대화문의 함축의미를 분석하기 위해서는 어떠한 과정이 필요한지를 제시하며 대화격률의 위배양상이 한국어에서 어떻게 표현되는지에 대해 유형별로 고찰함과 동시에 그 이론을 문학작품 중 주인석의 소설 「광주로 가는 길」에 적용하여 등장인물들의 대화문을 분석해 보임으로써 문학에 대한 언어학의 접근을 시도하는 데 있다.
지금까지 함축의미에 대한 연구는 매우 활발하게 진행되어 왔다. 언어를 진위의 개념으로 파악하는 데 많은 문제점이 존재한다는 것을 깨달은 후 더 넓은 범위에서 언어의 사용에 대해 고찰하고자 시작한 대화함축이론에 대한 연구는 현대 화용론자들의 주된 관심의 대상이 되었다. 하지만 함축이론의 연구에 비해 실제 발화상황과 유사한 문학작품을 대상으로 하여 작품 속 대화문의 대화함축 양상을 살펴본 연구는 많이 부족한 편이다. 따라서 이 논문에서는 주인석의 소설 「광주로 가는 길」을 분석대상으로 소설 속에 나타난 대화문의 대화함축 양상에 대해 살펴봄으로써 대화함축이론의 적용성과 실용성을 검토해 보고자 한다.
한 대화문의 함축의미를 분석하기 위해서는 그 대화문이 발화된 상황맥락과 전제를 파악하여야 한다. 상황맥락은 화자와 청자, 때와 장소, 화제와 양식과 같은 요소들로 구성되었는데 이러한 요소들은 종합적으로 작용하여 대화문의 의미의 표현과 이해에 영향을 미친다. 전제는 화자가 가정하고 발화하는 내용으로 문장의 명시적인 의미에 영향을 주는 의미론적 전제와 세상에 대한 지식과 구정보와 같은 상호공유지식을 바탕으로 발화하는 화용론적 전제가 있다. 이러한 전제를 파악하고 상황맥락과 화용론적 전제를 결부하여 대화문의 함축의미를 분석하는 과정이 곧 추론이다.
Grice의 대화협력원칙과 대화격률들은 최대한 효과적이고 타당성 있게 상호 협력하여 대화하기 위해서 대화참여자가 어떻게 해야 하는가를 밝히고 있는데 우리는 항상 이 원칙을 따르지는 않는다. 더 많은 경우에 화자는 이러한 격률들을 위배함으로써 청자로 하여금 특정맥락에 의해 확대해석하여 발화 속에 암시된 의미를 추론하게끔 한다. 이러한 이론을 실제 문학작품에 적용해 보았는데 실제로 연구대상인 주인석의 소설에서는 대화격률을 위배하여 발생한 대화함축현상이 매우 풍부하게 발생하고 있음을 분석 결과 확인할 수 있었다. 이는 대화함축이론이 실제로 적용됨을 검증해 본 것이며 이러한 양상이 생긴 원인을 맥락에 의해 살펴보면 작품의 내용과 사상을 분석하는 데 큰 도움을 줄 것이다. 또한 간접적으로 우리의 실생활의 언어가 대화상황, 배경, 화자의 의도에 따라 글자 그대로의 의미보다 더 다양한 의미를 갖게 된다는 것을 분석 작업을 통하여 알아볼 수 있었다.
