Recently the contents which utilized smartphone applications are rapidly increasing. With the increase of learners of Korean language, diverse purposes and characteristics are produced. So in the field of Korean language education, teaching method which utilizes Korean literature and culture is asked by learners as well as communication-oriented practical education which focuses on conversation and grammar.
This study first tried to make it clear that Sijo itself has good potential for utilization not only in aspects of literature and culture education but also in aspect of Korean language education. Second, it examined Sijo education method using smartphone application which is rapidly emerged as a multi-media. In this study, the author actually produced Sijo education application and made the foreign learners of Korean to use the application and examined the reponses of learners through questionnaires and supplementary interviews. By this method the author studied whether the new multi-media, smartphone application can be actually applied to Korean language education or not, future improvements, and the potential for utilization of Sijo which belongs to genre of Korean classical literature in aspect of Korean language education as well as literature and culture education.
Chapter one discussed the necessity of research, investigation of prior research, and the method of research, Chapter two examined the utilization of smartphone application and Sijo education. Chapter three treated the actual production of the application. Chapter four reviewed the estimation and analysis of Sijo education by running the application which was actually produced for Sijo education.
This study clarified that the learners of Korean language can learn voluntarily with the smartphone application. Learners said that Korean language education by Sijo education application is helpful to Korean language learning, and replied that the most helpful field was listening part. This proves that Sijo education is effective not only in aspects of literature and culture education but also in aspect of Korean language education. And most of the learners showed big interest in Korean culture and literature education and hoped to receive the Korean language education through Korean culture and literature education.
Follow-up research can be conducted based on the problems and estimations of learners in this study and I hope various Korean classical literature including Sijo to be combined with multi-media, and opportunities for Korean literature and culture education as well as Korean language education to be provided for the learners of Korean language.
