This study presents prosodic characteristics of mothers and teachers(child care teacher and kindergarten teacher). Rate(speech rate, articulation rate), number of accentual phrases(APs), number of intonational phrases(IPs), pitch-related factors(f0, pitch range, f0 standard deviation), intonation slope(mean Absolute, f0, q-tone slope) are studied. The subjects were 21 mothers who spoke to their child aged 4;00-6;11 and 24 teachers who spoke to their child in the child care center or kindergarten at the same age.
2groups spoke 2 sentence types(interrogative_alternative question, declarative_coordinated sentence) in 2 situations(the child presents in the room, absence of the child, but as if she were speaking to the child).
The results of the study can be summarized as follows.
First, Situation factor was statistically significant in speech rate and articulation rate in sentence types respectively(absence of the child > present of child). but group factor yields no significant differences.
Second, number of APs was statistically significant in group factor(mothers > teachers) in the declarative only. Number of IPs yields significant differences in group factor(teachers > mothers) in all the sentence types. Regardless of sentence types, in position which is not final word in clauses, teachers have more number of IPs than mothers. In addition, accordance of number of APs and IPs was higher in teachers than mothers .
Third, in all the sentence types, pitch-related factors(f0, pitch range, f0 standard deviation) were statistically significant in group factor(teachers > mothers).
Fourth, mean Absolute slope was statistically significant between mothers and teachers in the declarative only(teachers > mothers). f0 and q-tone slope were statistically significant between mothers and teachers in all the sentence types(teachers > mothers).
Mean Absolute slope observed in 2nd sentential final word not first sentential final word showed statistically significant difference between mothers and teachers in the interrogative(teachers > mothers).
Therefore, the finding is that teachers shows more noticeable prosodic characteristics observed in motherese than mothers.
