The purpose of the study was to search for ways to teach Chinese advanced learners onomatopoeia and mimetic words both systematically and efficiently.
When it comes to Korean language, so many developed onomatopoeic words and mimetic words are found which has made the language dynamic and rich. That was one of the reasons how graphically Korean speakers can describe humans and objects. Comparing to onomatopoeic words and mimetic words in Korean, those in Chinese have not been developed that much and, many of those Korean words would not match those Chinese words. In addition, Korean onomatopoeic words and mimetic words are being used variously and, that is what frequently makes Chinese Korean-language learners unable to compare those Korean onomatopoeic words and mimetic words to those in Chinese. For all those reasons, Chinese learners are having a hard time acquiring Korean onomatopoeic words and mimetic words, and during the process, they have to experience lots of errors too. The study understood the importance of efficient teaching methods of those onomatopoeic words and mimetic words, and in the beginning, research methods were proposed while a previous research was categorized basically into three sections to summarize current arguments.
In Chapter 2, the study reviewed phonemes, forms, syntactic uses and semantic functions of the onomatopoeia and mimetic words. When dealing with advanced learners, teachers should offer not only meanings of words but also rules and principles. That way, the learners would come up with better results more efficiently, realizing productive values of those words.
In Chapter 3, the study summarized onomatopoeic words and mimetic words appearing in advanced Korean language textbooks and Test of Proficiency in Korean, looking into words and expressions presented in practice materials for Test of Proficiency in Korean.
In Chapter 4, onomatopoeic words and mimetic words teaching methods were discussed in detail. First of all, regular principles in teaching methods by characteristics of Korean onomatopoeia and mimetic words were specifically proposed. Afterwards, teaching methods based on actual references were designed. The study carefully examined how to teach onomatopoeic words and mimetic words in traditional fairy tales, news articles, poems, songs and commercials. In addition, a real teaching model based on those teaching methods was proposed too.
In order to teach foreigners Korean onomatopoeic words and mimetic words, teachers should not only depend on textbooks but keep searching for proper teaching methods and designing various teaching/learning models in consideration of learners’ levels. In the study, a practical teaching/learning method was proposed considering levels of advanced learners. The study confirmed that efficient teaching methods could improve not only basic learning ability of learners but also their creative learning ability.
