The importance of communication competence is currently considered to have language proficiency. Especially, the listening skill has a crucial role to build up communication skills as well as the basic step to learn foreign language.
The purpose of this study is to prove the effective and helpful method, shadowing focusing on listening, to learn English in elementary school student. And that so, I investigated diverse studies for this; 1) some reasons why Koreans have some trouble to listen English, 2) scientific studies related to shadowing as an effective listening strategy, and 3) others as an integrative approaches such as dictation, sense-unit listening by chunking, direct listening/reading by sense unit.
Participants of this study are 15 elementary school students at the member of the after school English program and were made to study English listening each 45 minutes, twice a week for 6 months.
As a conclusion, the main results are as follows. First, the result of the listening test, PELT Junior for advanced level, shows a significant improvement in the students’ listening abilities when the shadowing is implemented. Such above result suggests that students may have developed their language skills by shadowing the sounds of English words aloud, or they may have become more familiar with the suprasegmental phonemes, such as stress, rhythm, and intonation and so on. The beginning part of this study, most participants felt hard to practice shadowing. They, however, can understand the sound related suprasengmentals’ elements and then distinguish foreigners’ pronunciation easier than before.
Second, a survey was investigated for the satisfaction of this program. The method of this survey is divided into two ways: Lickertis scale and type. It showed their attitude toward listening activities was also changed positively and recognized the importance of listening by themselves as practicing their pronunciation as well as being aware of the speed of English native speakers
Nevertheless there are some limits. First, some participants were not able to overcome the difficulties through shadowing and distinguish the sound in English. Secondly, mainly due to the integrative approach, it could not clarify how much effect each method has on listening ability and what effect it has on listening strategy development exactly.
Finally, the study shows that the shadowing method has a positive influence on the improvement of their listening ability and listening strategy development such as pronunciation, chunking ability, confidence and so on. Furthermore, it is essential to be deeply produced by researchers and teachers for an effective ESL/EFL language learning.
