This study conducts to discover a tendency and a trait of Korean accentual phrase based on analysing the realization tendency of Korean accentual phrase followed by the first sound of initial word. This study was conducted to select the contents of Korean pronunciation education, and the subjects were all Korean speakers.
To demonstrate the argument, in chapter two, the characters of Korean accentual phrase are analysed, based on the thesis of Lee, ho-young(1996) and Jun(1993) on the patterns of Korean phrase.
In chapter three, the study designed phonetic experiments on the patterns of Korean accentual phrase focused on consonants. The study hypothesized that the pitch patterns of Korean accentual phrase would be different according to the initial consonants of words. To demonstrate this, the first and the second syllable were combined, in case of realizing H with aspiration, fortis, fricative, and realizing L with lax consonants and nasal in the place of initial word sound. Arbitrary meaningless two-syllable words were created combining with a vowel Ah(/ㅏ/) in each consonant. With the created two-syllable words, '~께서' and '~보다' were combined with the sentence of 'Someone played well'.
In the chapter four, the realization tendency of pitch patterns of four-syllable words of Korean was analyzed. The study divided the case into two, which follows aspiration, fortis, fricative and follows lax consonants and nasal in the initial sound in the initial sound of the first syllable.
As a result, the regular patterns were observed whether the aspiration, fortis, and fricative would follow or lax consonants and nasal would follow after the initial sound of the first syllable, regardless of the initial sound of first syllable.
In the case of following the aspiration, fortis, and fricative, the height of the first syllable was 80~100hz higher than that of lax consonants and nasal.
However, regardless of consonants in the initial word sounds, LHLH patterns were observed in every combination of syllable. In conclusion, the pitch patterns of Korean accentual phrase are more affected by LHLH pattern than the phonetic specialty related with the heights of consonants in the initial word sound of each syllable. This study demonstrated the realization pattern traits of Korean accentual phrase according to the initial word sound, focussed on the fact that the initial word sound decides the height of first syllable. And this has been proved by the phonetic experiment.
With the result of experiment, the basic pattern of Korean accentual pattern in jun(1993) was LHLH. This study has significance with the fact that it could demonstrate the variation of height among each syllable, which could have not been demonstrated in the dichotomous LHLH system.
