This study is to examine the usages of three articles to understand the article system clearly.
Most native speakers in every country use native language intuitively. The use of English articles by native speakers is especially intuitive. However, Korean speakers, who don't have article system in Korean, have great difficulty in using English articles. The reason why Korean speakers have difficulty in using articles is because most of them think article errors don't have a large influence in communication. So English articles are often ignored and used indiscriminately. For this reason, many Korean learners make article errors.
There are several factors that make proper English article use difficult for Korean speakers. First, there is no article system in Korean. Second, countability and definiteness of nouns are very important factors in English, while they are not in Korean. Third, choice of article is decided in context and discourse. Fourth, because the education system is overly weighed toward college admission, most educational institutions pay little attention to teaching the article system.
Articles play the role of modifying nouns and these two are inseparable in English. Because no sentence can exist without a noun, there is always a choice of article use. Article errors can completely change the meaning of sentence and make the sentence ungrammatical. Therefore, effective teaching method of English articles is required to reduce making grammatical errors. The writer of this study proposes as follows.
First, it is necessary to explain the differences between Korean and English to English learners. Second, as a result of this study, detailed instruction on zero article is needed. Third, learning of English articles should take place in paragraph or context, not fragmentary sentences. Fourth, teachers should help students internalize the usage of English articles through practical discourse.
While the usage of English articles is almost regular, it is somewhat limited. Therefore, teachers should teach English article systematically and try to make various activities which can give more communication opportunities to students.
