This study was conducted to exploratory study about returnee college students in Korea, who studied at Overseas Korean School. The advanced research on returnee college students mainly focuses on the elementary or secondary school students, who studied abroad in English-speaking countries at young age. On the other hand, this study investigates on students who studied at Overseas Korean School during adolescence, and return to study at college in Korea, so this study tended to extend the scope of studying on retunee in college level.
Literature review was conducted prior to research. Based on the previous studies, Ethnic Identity and Alienation are designated as the independent variables, adjustment to College is designated as the dependent variables.
The data was obtained from 123 male and female university students in Korea, who studied during their adolescence at Korean school in Ho Chi Min City in Vietnam. The data collected for this research was used for several statistical analyses. Cronbach's α was measured for the reliability of the survey tools. Descriptive statistics, T-test and F-test, correlation analysis, regression analysis were performed for the relationship among the variables. Furthermore, analysis of survey was performed for understanding awareness of overseas-experience and the difficulty on adjustment to college when they return to Korea.
The major findings of this study are as followed:
First, there was difference in adjustment to college and alienation variable by the grade level of college. The freshman showed statistically significant low score in adjustment to college and high score alienation than other grades. Second, there were statistically significant correlations among adjustment to college, ethnic identity and alienation. Especially, there were strong negative correlations between adjustment to college and alienation.
Third, the ethnic identity and alienation predicts adjustment to college. It was shown that high ethnic identity affects on adjustment to college positively while high alienation affect on adjustment to college negatively.
Even if the students who studied at Overseas Korean School, the course of study was followed by Korean curriculum by Korean language, experience alienation in their adjustment process at college, according to move of their cultural environment.
Fourth, the result of survey showed about 93.5% of returnee college students in Korea reply in the affirmative at their overseas-experience. Concretely, they answer about the advantage of overseas-experience; 'Acquisition of wide perspective view of world', 'Experience of various culture', 'To get a momentum of development of personality'. It showed the overseas-experience can be a positive aspect in their life, even they can experience difficulty in their adjustment process.
While, the result of survey about the difficulty in adjustment process; 'Difficulty at academic adjustment', 'Lack of general information on Korean's life, 'Prejudice against returnees from overseas', this is connected with alienation and it shows that they can feel psychological barrier in their adjustment process.
Based on the findings, practical policy in adjustment to college for returnee college students who studied at Overseas Korean School can be discussed as followed:
First, the adjustment program or counseling service is suggested for freshman to reduce alienation and difficulty -academic adjustment, get general information about Korean's life-that they face on the very beginning of their adjustment process. The survey showed they prefer mentor and mentee program for the form of adjustment program. Second, the Overseas Korean School should realize the importance of ethnic identity and the education program in order to increase ability in ethnic identity.
Based on the findings, further research is suggested as followed:
First, there may be other variables related to adjustment to college of returnee students, so diverse variables such as social support should be considered. Also the microscopic variable is suggested for the sake of study the influence at the personal character formation by overseas-experience.
Second, the same research should be done on different returnee students who come from other countries such as Overseas Korean School from China or Japan. However, this study is cannot be generalized as the research was only conducted from Overseas Korean School at Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.
Third, this study uses self- survey method. Although the self- survey is the most widely used method to collect data, it could have inherent limitation. Moreover, the data is corrected by internet-based survey, so the student who does not access internet was excluded from this study.
