Wearing verbs are developed in similar ways in both Korean and Japanese, and it is known that wearing verbs are grouped in specific ways according to the objects associated with the specific action.
Accordingly a Japanese native speaker, who wants to learn Korean, is expected to learn as much Korean vocabulary as Japanese and this causes errors in the process.
The purpose of this study is to provide Japanese learners with clear information about Korean vocabulary through contrastive approaches of Korean and Japanese wearing verbs. Furthermore, the study proposes that this information will help the speakers themselves to be aware of common errors in Korean language education.
As for the process of this study, firstly, each Korean wearing verb and its Japanese counterpart were arranged as follows : '입다, 신다, 쓰다, 끼다, 걸다, 차다, 메다, 매다, 하다' and 'きる, かぶる, はく, はめる, かける, つける, しめる, かつぐ, せおう, さげる, する' Among them, '입다, 신다, 쓰다' and 'きる, かぶる, はく' were regarded as proto-typical forms and the others, '끼다, 걸다, 차다, 메다, 매다, 하다' and 'はめる, かける, つける, しめる, かつぐ, せおう, さげる, する' were regarded as extended forms.
Next, the proto-typical and extended meanings of wearing verbs of each language were searched by using the internet dictionary website. In addition to that, by analyzing examples they are carefully scrutinized to see what kinds of similarity or contrast exist.
Some Japanese wearing verbs could be replaced by Korean ones depending on the object being worn, the body part associated with that object and how to put it on. In some cases, on the contrary, other Japanese wearing verbs were not substituted by Korean verbs according to the object being worn because of their different usage. Also, there were some verbs which correspond to the objects being worn in the extended scope such as the Korean verb, '하다' and the Japanese verb, 'する, つける'.
In Korean language education, learners tend to count on similarities between Korean and Japanese unconsciously rather than recognize the differences between them.
In learning vocabulary particularly, beginners of Korean language make significant errors by following Japanese usage.
Though wearing verbs are fundamental words that are closely related to real life, they are not highly considered as an important element to be learned.
Thus, this study is expected to help those who speaks Japanese to learn Korean by presenting more detailed information about wearing verbs.
It is unfortunate that this doesn't include the sorts of errors which learners are likely to commit in using the extended wearing verbs by analyzing the errors Japanese Korean language learners make.
In addition, it is unfortunate that the doesn't go further by suggesting concrete ways how the study is utilized in practical vocabulary learning. This should be left for a future study.
