There has recently been an international increase in the number of people who want to learn Korean language, as economic and cultural status of South Korea elevated substantially. The number of foreigners, who learn Korean language for the purpose of schoolwork, employment, and understanding Korean culture, has been on the rise. In addition to this fervent domestic trends, many noted universities all over the world have founded department of Korean language. In this respect, we are in dire need of more diverse textbooks and teaching methods for Korean language education.
The Korean learners today come across all sorts of audio-visual media such as TV, internet, and movie, and are even referred to as multimedia generation. Korean language education needs some sources to reflect the traits of these media. In other words, a way of education, which makes the most of audio-visual media that could possibly appeal to and motivate learners, is necessary in the middle of multimedia generation.
Among various audio-visual media, sitcom is extremely useful in Korean language education, as it has not only recreational function to arouse learners' interests but also educational function to provide a plethora of practical language.
Thus, this study analyzes one of the most famous Korean sitcom 'Guchimupsihighkick', and suggests a specific resource for students to tap into. Particularly, such resource is comprised of core functions of communication; listening and speaking.
Chapter 2 deals with the definition and necessity of instructional media, and subsequently inquires into its types and characteristics. It also sets forth the educational effect and theoretical teaching model based on audio-visual media.
Chapter 3 discusses the reason why 'Guchimupsihighkick' was chosen, and introduces the storyline and characters. An analysis was made for 167 episodes in total, and top 10 episodes appropriate as audio-visual teaching materials were selected. Then, it sorts out the results of analysis on linguistic and cultural elements of each episode.
Chapter 4 suggests various ways to exploit Episode No. 92 and 125, out of 10 carefully selected episodes, for listening and speaking. Then, a listening-speaking integrated teaching model is organized to suggest a practical lesson plan.
'Guchimupsihighkick', which has many a humorous element, is not only efficient for drawing great interest from students, but also is useful for learning practical language through ordinary lifestyle presented therein. Its relatively shorter running time of 30 minutes and clear four steps in composition are extremely useful as teaching materials. Hopefully, this study could introduce 'Unstoppable High Kick' to many Korean language learners and suggest a specific resource for students to tap into, so that it could be actually used in Korean language education.
