As the bond between China and Korea on trade and academic exchange has been enhancing continuously, Korean is gaining immense popularity amongst Chinese. Data indicates that Sino-Korean makes up of 60 percent of Korean vocabulary. Consequently, for those students longing for Korean, the study of Sino-Korean is quite essential.
Sino-Korean, which was introduced into Korea by Chinese around AD200, has experienced live long development. Some of them are similar with Chinese phonetics, while the others are quite different. The sungmo system part of Sino-Korean is quite confusing for Chinese students. Hence, the dissertation is developed with the comparison between the 5,627 characters in ‘guangyun’ in Ancient Chinese phonetics and the 2,500 characters in Korean common Chinese characters which were announced by the Korean government, studying the relations of the sungmo systems between Sino-Korean and Chinese phonetics.
Initially, the objectives and necessity of this dissertation is stated and some of the preliminary researches are displayed in Chapter 1.
Next, in Chapter 2, the dissertation analyzes Ancient Chinese phonetics with modern Chinese phonetics to find out the relationships between both sungmo systems and figure out the changes of Ancient Chinese phonetics, using the 5,627 characters in ‘guangyu’.
Furthermore, by analyzing the 5,627 characters, the Chapter 3 of the dissertation tracks the relations of sungmo systems between ancient Chinese phonetics and modern Korean phonetics. As Sino-Korean was introduced from China, the two systems are in separable in spite of the change safter the Sino-Korean was introduced.
Finally, in Chapter 4, the dissertation uses the 2,500 Education Department authorized common Chinese characters in Korea to analyze the relations of the sungmo systems between modern Chinese phonetics and modern Sino-Korean, by which the similarity and difference of the two systems can be summarized.
In conclusion, the relations between Sino-Korean and Chinese phonetics and the process of forming the relation is displayed in the dissertation. Although the dissertation does not consist of educational context, the result of the analysis can be part of the references to Korean professors and make a difference in the lecture. I hope that the dissertation can have an impact on researches about the relations of the two languages and the study of Korean.
