The objective of this study is to investigate what strategy Koreans use when they read materials and find the effective reading strategy depending on context. The viewpoint of our strategy is based on previous studies and we use text strategies in accordance with different situations. Through this study, we suggest teaching methods according to reading material types.
In Chapter 1, we introduce our study objective and different previous studies on text types and reading strategies. In Chapter 2, we investigate different methodologies about reading strategies through previous studies. According to previous studies, most studies were to examine the text compositions and text comprehension. However, because this passive viewpoint is mainly focused on how readers understand texts, it is difficult for readers to use critical and active reading. Therefore, to solve these difficulties, we conduct interviews and surveys about what problems learners experience in real educational situations in Chapter 3. According to a survey, we know that learners have the burden of long texts as well as difficulties in understanding texts because of the lack of vocabulary and background knowledge. Based on these points, we suggest a reading strategy for learners. The levels of reading strategies are divided into 3 types: before reading, during reading, after reading and word investigation, paragraphs and whole text.
In Chapter 4, we identify the limits and problems of learners emerging after the actual learning lesson. Through this study, we suggest that learners should decrease the burden of text and perceive the positive aspect about obtaining information.
We suggest that educators should have interest in using reading strategies for learners and create various reading materials to induce learners’ interest. Through this strategy, we can make an effective way to enhance, not only the learning ability, but methods of learning in actual learning situations.
