This study aims to select Korean and Spanish proverb for foreign speakers, especially Spanish speakers who learn Korean language.
Until recently, learners of Korean language were only limited within Asian countries, but an increasing number of students are now learning Korean from countries in Southeast Asia, China, Japan and even Europe and South America.
Recently, as the number of people learning Korean in Peru and South America has begun to increase, the importance of teaching Korean proverb is also increasing because it helps learners expand their understanding on Korean lifestyle, values and culture. Many studies have already focused on the proverb written in English, Japanese and Chinese; however, few studies have been conducted on the proverb for Spanish learners.
This study aims to enhance the level of understanding on Korean and Spanish cultures by selecting Korean and Spanish proverb and finding similarities between the two cultures for Spanish learners who learn Korean in Peru, where academic studies are not yet actively being conducted.
The study can be summarized into the following chapters.
Chapter 1 explored research methods on selecting Korean and Spanish proverb, and examined the importance and methods of Korean language education by conducting an advanced study on the proverb of each country and the objective of accurate and fluent communication in communicating by having Spanish learners who learn Korean abroad select Korean proverb.
Chapter 2 analyzed 8 textbooks from 8 education institutions across Korea, 3 textbooks that are currently being used in institutions located in Spanish-speaking countries. Based on the analysis, the study analyzed what and how each proverb is presented in terms of suggesting the four areas of linguistic functions, cultural elements, an appropriate number of proverb, grammar and suggestion methods.
Chapter 3 analyzed the current state of education on Korean proverb and the level of demand on Korean proverb learning by conducting a survey on the students and teachers within institutions of Spanish-speaking countries. The study further analyzed the level of demand based on the necessity of proverb-learning by Spanish students and comparison on the two languages.
Based on the proverb selection standards for Spanish students who learn Korean, 50 Korean proverbs were selected in Chapter 4 for education purposes by selecting those that appear over three times in the textbook and checking their presence in advanced studies. A category of Spanish proverb was selected based on the number of words that can be translated into Korean according to the transparency of translated meaning.
Chapter 5 distinguished the Korean and Spanish proverb by use of language, descent and women, human relations and life themes according to similarities in meaning of the proverb, thereby examining the similarities that arise in both cultures and embedded meaning of the proverb.
Educational implications of such findings include the following. First, the current state of education on proverb was examined through the survey on proverb learning by students in Peru; it was also found that people had a high level of interest in Korean language, culture and values through demand on proverb education, and that education on proverb was actually in progress. Second, by selecting proverbs that correspond to Korean proverb according to transparency of meaning based on the comparison of the two countries' proverbs, the study found that there will be positive effects on Korean language and cultural education. Third, many studies have been conducted on cultural similarities and differences by comparing Korean proverb and different countries' proverbs; however, this was the first study to find similarities for each theme by comparing Korean and Spanish proverb. This indicates that further improvements are expected on Korean learning and cultural understanding of the two languages.
