At 21st century, Korea becomes a multicultural and multiracial society thanks to the development of a diverse range of media and increasing of international exchange. In response to this change, nevertheless, Korean society has been dealing with urgent issues only for embracing surrounding culture but is still required to suggest significant ways to understand multicultural society by stage through systematic education. In this context, this study intended to suggest a way of understanding multicultural society in the field of Korean language education and especially seek for an educational method using multicultural novel. In general, literature can contribute to enhancing communication skill and cultural understanding of foreign learners through acquiring a language.
Especially, novel, as a genre of literature, is full of artistic effect and contains cultural sentiment, thus can support Korean language learners to enhance their communication skill initially and affect their understanding on the literature itself and Korean culture effectively. Additionally, literature education using multicultural novel enables the learners with multicultural background to identify themselves with the novel’s main characters easily, so it is expected to get more learning effect.
As other cultural people in Korean society, Korean language learners can understand and experience various lives in Korean society indirectly but effectively through multicultural novel.
This study introduced a way of educational method using multicultural novel would be applicable in the field of Korean language education. The educational method is designed for Korean language learners to enhance practical and good communication skills and literary attainments and presents culture-based comprehensive education and trends of multicultural era. For practical teaching and learning, this study suggested learning activities and detailed ways in three phases of learning process: before, in the middle of and after the reading respectively.
This study tried to suggest a way of using multicultural novel as a method of cultural education in accordance with the trend of current multicultural society and aimed to expedite continuous studies on various cultural education and educational methodologies using multicultural novel at each stage of training. Consequently, it is expected that those educational methodologies would become useful learning materials for Korean language learners.
