The Paternal Role in the Education of Children in a Rural Multicultural Family *

(Abstract)
This study was intended to find out a desirable alternative to children's education in relation to what the father's capability and role were in the multicultural family. An empirical analysis was conducted for the subjects living in Uiryeong -gun and Haman -gun by using the structured questionnaire. As a result, the following findings were obtained:
First, an attempt was made to investigate the demographical and sociological characteristics of the survey region. As a result, it was found that there was a great difference in age between father and his spouse in most low-income brackets.
Second, it was found that better-educated fathers performed his better role in relation to father's role performance.
Third, it was found that most of the fathers had a positive view of their wife's country in relation to the attitude of accepting multiple cultures.
Fourth, the fathers' attitude toward delivery of their cultures showed a fixed idea that their wife should learn the Korean language, children's education, etiquette and custom and the like as she should live in Korea.
Fifth, it was found that the fathers with the lower level of education had a lower sense of responsibility for children's education in relation to their capability for it. And the better-educated fathers showed the higher level of contribution to their children's education.
Sixth, it was found that the source of knowledge and information needed for children's education was mostly in orders of the day-care center, kindergarten and school.
Based on the above findings, this study presented the following policy suggestions:
First, it is necessary to resolve the conflict due to a difference in age, educational level and way of life. For this purpose, the paternal role program should be the graded program suited to their income level and educational level as well as visit education to make long-term support possible.
Second, it is impossible to apply a program uniformly to the multi-cultural family. Therefore, the paternal role education should be provided for fathers according to their family members, their spouse's multi-cultural environment and their household income and educational level.
Third, both government and community should develop the paternal role program and make the support policy according to a difference in an attitude of cultural acceptance between couples in a multi-cultural family.
Fourth, government's sustained support policy is needed for fathers in a multicultural family to learn the Korean language, culture and children's education and the like. For this purpose, legal and institutional reorganization is needed to obligate fathers in a multicultural family to receive education for a given period.
Fifth, it is necessary to revitalize the multicultural family support center for fathers in a multicultural family of low educational level and low income level and develop the program for getting together with children through this.
Sixth, it was found that the fathers, younger, lower in the educational level and lower in the monthly income, seldomly imposed sanctions against children's behaving with bad habits. Therefore, it is necessary to educate fathers to learn how to educate children in a right manner.
Seventhly, it is necessary to open the school for fathers in a multicultural family, introduce the mentor system with the general family and establish the support policy such as support for the gathering of multicultural families, counseling on the family problem, job placement for the economic self-support of the impoverished family and the like.
