This study is to develop a pedagogic method in teaching Korean language expression of greetings at an elementary level to Korean language learners, particularly marriage-oriented migrant women, using drama. For this, it reviews Korean teaching materials and analyzes needs of the migrant women, and therefore tries to confirm that drama in teaching Korean expressions for greetings is much more effective than textbook-centered teaching method. The study consists of five chapters and can be outlined as follows:
Chapter 1 discusses the purpose and need of teaching method of greeting expressions in Korean using drama. It notes that there exists lack of learning models for Korean language education of greetings, and, based on this fact, a study direction has been decided.
In Chapter 2, it focuses on theoretical background of education utilizing media and its educational results and analyzes teaching and learning method using it in reality. Further, it suggests greeting expressions in Korean language by categories. The study indicates that varied Korean greeting expressions are spoken in different contexts in different forms.
In Chapter 3, it looks into the types of Korean language expressions of greetings suggested in textbooks by making comparison between the textbooks published for marriage based migrant women. To do this, it selects two references, Korean Language for Marriage-based Migrant Women and Korean Language for Korea Immigration and Integration Program (KIIP) published by the Ministry of Justice for Korean language textbook targeting the migrant women, and analyzes structural components of contents about Korean greeting expressions and arranges them type by type in a distribution chart to look into the results of the textbook analysis and problems. To study the needs of the marriage based women immigrants and to prepare for an experimental class, it conducts a preliminary survey and reviews the results of the survey to see what is required for the women immigrants and then makes a selection for experimental class teaching Korean expressions for greetings using drama.
In Chapter 4, it sets up in a real and practical manner and carries out an experimental class based on the teaching model of, among other Korean expressions for greetings, ‘speech act of apology’ and reviews its educational results. In planning the class first, it suggests a phased flow chart and different time-based teaching and learning plan with specific illustrations on the class details according to the procedure and different stages of learning. It conducts an experiment through a real class session and an ex post facto survey.
