The purpose of this is to do an Acoustic Analysis of English voiced and voiceless stops in terms of acoustic phonetics.
To achieve this goal, I analyzed the differences between Korean Students and Native speakers' pronunciation of English stop sounds by using the Praat program. I recorded the sounds with microphone made in Shure company and analyzed the spectrum by measuring their Voice Onset Times values and spectrum.
This study focuses on the voiced and voiceless stop sounds in English produced by Korean students and the native speakers. To analyze the study, I restricted the environment of the words that can produce the English stop sounds to the initial position and the last position. And then, I selected the twelve words in the complementary distribution depending on the environment. The subjects in this study are 6 Korean students and 2 native speakers who teach English in the university.
The first experiment is to compare the spectrum of the stop sounds in the initial position. The results are as follows. In case of voiceless stop sounds, Korean students' VOT is shorter than the native speakers and the aspiration is also weaker than those. In case of voiced stop sounds, the native speakers' VOT is less than 30msec, but Korean students' VOT is longer than 30msec. It means Korean students tend to produce voiced sounds like voiceless sounds.
The second experiment is to compare the time duration of vowel sounds that positioned in front of the stop sounds in the last position. The results are as follows. Native speaker produced the vowel sounds in front of the voiced sound longer than the voiceless sound. But, in case of Korean students, some produced the voiced and voiceless sounds without any differences. The other made little difference in producing.
In conclusion, Korean students make the error when they produce the voiced and voiceless stop sounds. Because there aren't English voiced sound /b, d, g/ in Korean, they pronounce the voiced stop sounds like voiceless stop sounds.
