This study aims to examine the necessity of academic purpose TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) according to the purpose of examinees and also the measures to improve questions to evaluate writing.
It is stated that the purpose of TOPIK is to measure and evaluate Korean proficiency so that the results can be used for college entrance or job seeking. However, foreign students complain that even if they acquire an intermediate or higher level in it, they can hardly use it for academic purpose. Thereupon, this study intends to suggest the necessity for developing academic purpose TOPIK and writing questions considering the actual communicative situations.
There are diverse ways to verify the validity of an evaluation. First, this article uses the method of verification through comparison with other evaluation tools. In this way, it analyzes writing evaluations of local and foreign language proficiency tests and studies similarities and differences between TOPIK and others. Second, it employs the method to see if the evaluation tool reflects what to be evaluated properly. By analyzing writing items of TOPIK writing evaluation according to its text types and functional types, this will check if it properly reproduces the actual communication situations. Third, as an evidence to see it with statistics, this study suggests the method to improve writing evaluation based on the research on Korean learners’ TOPIK writing evaluation.
