This study explored the locations of main ideas, macro-level rhetorical patterns and directness/indirectness in L1 and L2 argumentative s written by Korean ESL students in the United States. They were divided into two groups based on their writing proficiency ability. The results indicate that many participants used English rhetoric to construct their L1 and L2 s. Moreover, the findings also demonstrate that most of the Korean ESL students preferred the initial location when placing their main ideas regardless of the languages they used and the varying L2 writing proficiency levels. With regard to the macro-level rhetorical patterns, the students often utilized the "Explanation-Collection" style, in which the writer’s opinion is followed by equally weighted supporting reason. This is akin to the writing styles of native English speakers. With regard to argument indirectness, the majority of the students preferred to write directly. In addition, two of the three emerging themes in this study revealed that a significant period of residence in an English-speaking country and whether attending writing classes has an unequivocal effect on their L1 and L2 writing rhetoric. The third emerging theme demonstrated that a number of Korean ESL students believed that their L1 and L2 writing similarly affected the other. This study’s findings, however, confirmed a “reverse unidirectional transfer,” meaning that the rhetoric transfer actually occurred from L2 to L1. This was often in stark contrast to the participants’ initial perception. Interestingly, the level of motivation to produce quality writing, as well as the individual belief of what constitutes good writing, can also affect their writing convention. Finally, the possible implications for contrastive research are discussed in the conclusion of this .
