This research is to analyze the tendency of domestic and foreign Children’s literature award winning picture books’ features, types, the size and shapes of the picture books and to figure out the limitations and seek the direction for Korean original picture books. Furthermore, it is to provide help for Early childhood teachers and parents know the features of the picture books and choose the prominent picture books.
To fulfill the purposes, the subjects of the study are as below.
1. What are the literature features(literature structure) of domestic and foreign children’s literature award winning picture books?
2. What are the artistic features(artistic structure, artistic media) of the award winning picture books?
3. What are the types(Non-written picture books, written picture books, parody picture books) of the award winning picture books?
4. What are the sizes and shapes of award-winning picture books?
The subjects of the research are 63 of the domestic and foreign children literature award winning picture books from 2001 to 2011. For the books from national children’s literature awards, the subjects of the analysis are the award winning books from “Borim Awards of a literary Creation”, “children’s literature Awards of BIR Hwanggeum-Dokkebisang”, “Seoul Fairy Tale illustration Awards”, and “Korean Children’s book Awards”, and the books from international children’s literature awards of “The Cardecott medal” and “The Kate Greenway Medal, and “New York Times Best illustrated Books” are the subjects of the analysis. The book analysis and the analysis check lists created by Shin, Hye Sun(2002) and kang, Sun Woo(2007) are modified and adopted in this research. Prior to the research, we performed a preliminary survey to figure out the appropriacy of the analysis check list and possible problems occurred during the research. The checklist is modified based on the preliminary survey result. Also, applicable data are filled out according to analysis criteria after reading analysis books, and then filled out the check list after analyzing books in sub-categories. Finally, to analyze the features of the domestic and foreign children’s literature award winning books, SPSS Statistics 19.0 program was used to calculate frequency and percentage.
The results of the research are as below in brief.
First, the Korean children’s literature award winning picture books are mostly realistic picture books followed by fantasy picture books, informative picture books, traditional fairy tales, and children’s songs and poems. In foreign award winning picture books, there are mostly fantasy picture books, followed by realistic picture books, traditional fairy tales and informative picture books. None are traditional children’s song in either domestic or foreign picture books, and in foreign picture books, none are children’s song and poem.
Second, the Korean children’s literature award winning picture books’ themes are mostly humor and fantasy, followed by daily life, family, environment, tradition, social and environmental issues and others. the Foreign award winning picture books’ themes are mostly humor and fantasy, followed by daily live, environment, social and environmental issues, family and others, and none covers traditions. Also, both Korean and foreign picture books do not cover religions.
Third, Korean children’s literature award winning picture books’ main characters are mostly children and adolescence, followed by animals, others, adults. On the other hand, foreign award-winning picture books’ main characters are mostly animals, followed by children and adolescence, adults, and others.
Fourth, for the types of describing the main characters in domestic award winning picture books, round characters were more used than flat characters. In foreign award winning picture books, round characters were used more frequently as well.
Fifth, in domestic award winning picture books, the main characters are the subject to solve the conflict the most, followed by main characters and surrounding characters, unsolved, surrounding characters. In foreign award winning picture books, the subject of solving conflicts are mostly the main characters, followed by main characters and surrounding characters, surrounding characters, and unsolved.
Sixth, in domestic award winning picture books, the plots are mostly linear, followed by circular, cumulative, and episodic and chain plots are not used. In foreign award winning picture books, the plots are mostly linear as well, followed by circular, chain, cumulative and episodic plots.
Seventh, in domestic award winning picture books, the endings are mostly happy ending, followed by open, and tragic, and none are other ending. In foreign award winning picture books, there are mostly happy ending, followed by open, other endings, and none are tragic ending.
Eighth, in domestic award winning picture books, the spatial settings are mostly the real world, followed by surreal, and real and surreal. In foreign award winning picture books, they are mostly surreal setting, followed by real world, and real and surreal world. In domestic picture books, the time settings are more present than past as well as foreign picture books.
Ninth, domestic award winning picture books use mostly various colors, followed by 2-3 colors, and 1 color. Foreign picture books used mostly various colors as well, followed by 2-3 colors, and 1 color.
Tenth, domestic award winning picture books use more curve than straight lines, and use more neat than diffuse lines. Also, they use thin and weak lines more than bold and strong lines.
